	I agree with Tim Allen, some of these I typed and then found out my apostrophes or parentheses were incorrect. Surely loving should be acceptable for lovin'? But even with that I still only got 48.

	The list has several flaws (it overrepresents the 1960s and 1970s and underrepresents the 1990s) but i think it is a good list for readers of the magazine. If you're not a classic rock fan, it is difficult (i only got 7).

	I know that the Byrds version of Mr. Tambourine Man is more well known, but the song was written by Bob Dylan and I really like his version better.

	Emma: A lot of songs were written by Bob Dylan, but made famous by other bands. The famous version should be the one that's on the list.

	ditto, Emma (in terms of liking Dylan's version better). As for the list... music seems to me the most subjective of all the major art forms, so there's always going to be much discontent. I only managed 72 here, but there are a number of tracks that I'd include amongst my own faves: "Like a Rolling Stone", "Satisfaction", "What's Going On", "Respect", "Good Vibrations", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "What'd I Say" -- and that's just from the top ten. I do agree that it's too over-representative of the 60s in particular. There are too many great tracks here for me to feel begrudgingly towards RS, however!

	I think I Can't Get No Satisfaction should count. The actual title of the song is (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. The part in parenthesees wasn't even included for the song (as it was in other songs on the list)

	Yeah, the Rolling Stone list is terrible. Q104.3 in New York does a Top 1,043 rock songs of all time each Thanksgiving. The top ten is always a little anti-climatic, but then again, should Stairway to Heaven be number one on any list?

	Not a bad list. Sure, there are others I would like to have seen included - but there's nothing that sticks out as being particularly out of place either. "Like a Rolling Stone" is indeed the greatest rock song of all time.

	Yes, it's a top 100 of all time list. It's bound to be rubbish. They always are because they're different from your personal list. And they always over-represent the 60s and 70s, partly because they're compiled by people who were young then and partly because it's hard to tell whether something that was released last year is going to be a classic or just a passing fad.

	meltingbridge, i don't thing it's fair to say that the 60s and 70s are overrepresented, or that the 90's are underrepresented. Are you saying that they should have put in an equal number from each decade just for the sake of fairness? It just so happens that most of the greatest songs do come from those decades. I'm not saying there weren't lots of great songs in the 90s, but the problem is that a lot of them were heavily influenced by the preceding decades. Remember that the full list is actually 500 songs, so perhaps your favourites are in there somewhere ( http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/500songs )

	I would suggest accepting "Maybelline" for "Maybellene," since it is so often misspelled that way (sometimes even on Chuck Berry's own greatest hits albums!).

	68 here. Blanked on a lot of Beatles as well and some I missed... geez - Norwegian Wood, California Girls, Help, Blowin' In The Wind. Typed "Maybelline" wrong. Tried "Whole Lotta Shakin" and left out the rest. Tried every Bowie song but "Heroes" and lastly I kept saying the Sam Cooke song was the one featured in the movie "Talk To Me" but couldn't remember the name. All in all, if you just type the song EVERYONE knows by the artist, most times you'll be right. The only one of these that'd make my Top 100 all time would be "God Only Knows" and maybe "One" by U2

	@Salukimars: I know that it is in completely poor taste to argue with anyone about taste in music. Moreover, I understand what can turn people away from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which is, in a paraphrase of the band's own words, a Pixies knock-off. It also features an utterly strange chord progression and screamed, unintelligible and enigmatic lyrics. However, as a former music journalist and amateur rock historian, I solemnly believe that today's music and the music of the last 17 years, would not be possible without "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Regardless of how "good" it is, its importance cannot be debated.

	Its not about taste...grunge is my favorite genre, and I somewhat like Nirvana, and the song...however, I wouldn't even consider it the best song on Nevermind... but I think it receives too much credit. Sometimes people rate the song because of its "groundbreaking-ness" and not on the song itself.

	Rolling Stone ain't what it was. This list sucks. No Van Halen? No AC/DC? But Dionne Warwick made it. Dionne Warwick?! I think this list was made by Ringo Starr. Now, U2 is great, and so is "One." But "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" makes it and "Pride (In the Name of Love)" doesn't?! Whatever - Rolling Stone just put Obama on the cover. Uh, what song did he do? May the ghost of Hunter S. Thompson rise and knock some heads around over there!!

	@Salukimars: But I think "groundbreaking-ness" is what this list is all about. That's why there's the abundance of the 60s and 50s as was derided by previous posters. Notice that the only punk songs are The Ramones and Sex Pistols, and I think "New Rose" by The Damned trumps both of those for quality, but not importance. Grandmaster Flash as the only rap song? Two Bob Marley songs? There's nothing else in all of reggae? This list has nothing to do with quality, it is only the overall influence on the rest of rock and roll. Which is why Dylan tops the list. Finally, just because I'm a nerd, one could make a case for "Bleach" being Nirvana's only grunge album. Now accepting flames...

	@ : A few comments on that. 1) Seeing that Rolling Stone is a rock magazine I don't think that they would include these. 2) Seeing that Rolling Stone is an American magazine, I don't think that they would include Boyzone, because it was never as popular in America as elsewhere. 3) This is only the top 100, as others have pointed out, so they might be in 101-500. 4) Backstreet Boys have it, but I would almost point to Britney Spears, and then specifically to the production of Max Martin. Martin was the guy behind that crazy staccato explosion in that type of music (i.e. the blamps in "blamp blamp yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah blamp blamp I think i did it again...") This was then added to N'Sync and copied by artists like Celine Dion. Incidentally he's also behind some of Kelly Clarkson's hits right now, which I always thought were influenced by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

	Actually, Admiral: I've been pretty much ignoring : for a long time. (See Most Populous Countries.) However, occasionally he has some reasonably interesting and insightful comments (See NBA Rookies of the Year,) and therefore when he has something interesting to say (or something that I can comment on, regardless of his intentions) I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt.

	So I actually did the leg work and found the entire 500 song list. There's some interesting things that came up: 1) Most of the songs people are angry about find their way on. 2) Still very very little 1990s music relative to other decades. 3) Hip hop is much better represented, but in weird ways. Sugarhill Gang gets only 248 for "Rapper's Delight" and Run DMC gets 287 for "Walk This Way." These would be okay if Outkast didn't get 180 for "Hey Ya!" and worse yet Eminem got 166 for "Lose Yourself"!!! I like both of these songs (Outkast much much more than Eminem) but how influential are they? Furthermore, the Beastie Boys, pioneers of rap, get only as high as 475? For "Sabotage"!?!? They have nothing better that could reach anywhere higher??? On a side note: The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony - 382. Take that One Hit Wonders Quiz!
