That would be cool if there were a way to reverse the quizzes. For example guess the former name by looking at the current name.

Isn't the renamed places quiz a little too similar? http://www.sporcle.com/games/notconstantinople.php

Many of those were extremely difficult....I got four right, and yes, one of them was thanks to They Might Be Giants.

Well, I got 9 (and only one by random guessing). Lutetia I can thank Asterix for....though really, one of the answers is nobody's business but the Turks. (Couldn't help myself, sorry)

I'm very surprised only 10% of people got Madras correct. Although that may be because all the Brits are still asleep.

I only got two, one thanks to an episode of Gilmore Girls and the other to a summer doing Miss Saigon and conversations about how the place mentioned has since changed its name. I never would have guessed the United States one.

As a person from Melbourne who studied Australia History, it's pretty embarrassing that I only got Melbourne by randomly typing it. Who knew it was ever called Bearbrass?

johnlk - i think the quiz is specifically for cities, not countries. but that would be a good edition for the other quiz, which is just places.

Got 9/20 - I knew six and the other three were lucky guesses. I had no clue about the others except I knew Leopoldville was in the Congo somewhere, but my knowledge of Belgian (?) colonizers far outstrips my ability to name cities in Africa. Challenging but fun. I knew Edo from crossword puzzles, and Yerba Buena 'cause I was born there.

Yerba Buena translates to "good grass". And all this time I thought the reason people headed west was for the gold. No wonder the hippies from San Francisco were always so happy!

@ IHateRegistering: Then the quiz would have to list only cities that had had only one other name in their history, or allow a great many alternate answers. Istanbul used to be Constantinople, sure, but before that it was Byzantium.

@Johnlk: Batavia got that name after the Dutch took control of the existing town back in the early 17th century.

@RedLIon "surprisingly difficult"? I think it was about as difficult as I thought it would be. I got 1... Why they changed it... I can't say, must have liked it better that way.

I saw Batavia, and being a Napoleonic Wars buff thought "Batavian Republic! Must be Amsterdam!" Didn't go the extra mile and think of the Dutch East Indies. Did, however, get Seoul because the old name sounded like Annyong from Arrested Development. Also, does Dhaka really count when it's not even a phonetic change?

Leopoldville should be obvious given the Democratic Republic of Congo's Belgian connection. DRC was King Leopold II's private property, back in the day...
