Hmm, I'd say that Scout Finch is really the protagonist of To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus might be the hero, but it's her story. And thank you to Benjamin Linus on LOST for your help with "Dean Moriarty."

@Paul, I missed Leopold Bloom because I was thinking of Leo Bloom from The Producers. That thoroughly confused me

Hester Prynne reminds me of a funny cartoon I once saw. A bunch of women walk around dejectedly with "A"s marked on their lapels. On the side is a smiling woman with a buxom chest. She is marked with an "A+".

Is it really spelled Randle? I'm just wondering having never read the book. I would think it would be Randall.

I really don't think that Ishmael works as the protagonist for Moby Dick. Ahab is the protagonist, Ishmael doesn't drive any of the actions, he really just reports what happened. I also agree that Scout, not Atticus, is the protagonist who should be listed for To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is merely A protagonist, while Scout is THE protagonist.

@Lyn: Yes, it's really spelt `Randle', as is easily verified with your favourite search engine or online encyclopaedia.

Great quiz, although I think the original titles should be accepted as well, like 'Die Blechtrommel' or just 'Blechtrommel' for 'The Tin Drum'.

Great quiz! Somehow missed Pilgrim and Smith even though I've read both those. I agree with the Scout and Ahab comments. I'd never really thought about Heathcliff as the protagonist because he's such a sociopath but I guess he does drive most of the plot. If you're going to choose Ismael though, you might as well have chosen Lockwood instead of Heathcliff.

I feel a lot better about getting 8 after reading some of the comments :P Many of the ones I didn't get kind of tickled my brain as familiar, but I couldn't place them with anything.

I hate to be nitpicky about this, but On the Road is one of my favorite books and although Dean Moriarty is a central and essential character, I wouldn't say that he's the protagonist. There are large portions of the book where he is absent. I would instead consider the lead role to be Sal Paradise.

I agree with hydra. I'm actually in the middle of On the Road right now and Sal is DEFINITELY the protagonist. Dean is referred to as "Dean" and Sal is referred to as "I"

Erm, the protagonist in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" isn't Randall P. McMurphy in the book, it's the Chief. McMurphy's just the most recognizable character and is the protagonist in the film. Not that it's that important.

Captain Nemo is not the protagonist in 20,000 Leagues. The protagonist is Professor Aronnax. The story is told from his first person perspective and details his adventure. Nemo is a main character but not THE protagonist.
