I'm glad you did 25 countries, it's much more interesting than the standard top ten you see elsewhere.

England does not equal Great Britain does not equal United Kingdom, hence why the first two don't work for this game. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles_(terminology) Congo doesn't work for Dem Rep of Congo because there is also a Rep of Congo. Learn things.

I also only missed #18. And there is a difference between Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Uk is different to England, Britain and Great Britain. Britain is the main island. Great Britain is the island plus northern ireland England is just england. And the UK is country. Get it right.

Not exactly Mr Badman Browne. You're right about England. Great Britain is made up of England, Scotland and Wales (so the main island). United Kingdom is Great Britain plus North Ireland. "Britain" isn't officially anything, but it's widely used as a substitute for UK, politically. Again, refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Isles_(terminology)

For being somewhat geographically ignorant, I did better than I was expecting (20/25). Thought there would be more African countries, and that there would have been a few of the former SSRs. I'll quiz my wife about this over lunch.

Wow, Christina, please quit while you're ahead (sort of). I wonder if "US" should work for United States similar to how "UK" does, just for continuity if nothing else. Otherwise a great game.

"USA" works for the United States. And Christina, you don't exactly have the high ground when it comes to geographic knowledge, so I'd avoid telling people that you're a European History major if I were you.

It turns out that, if England were a country in its own right, it would only drop from 22nd to 23rd in the list, since about 51M of the UK's 61M people live there.

This has been quite an interesting discussion, however, as the real intention of Sporcle is for learning and fun, we would like to make a friendly request for everyone to get along! Corrections and explanations are always welcome (and encouraged!), but insults are no fun for anyone.

Lets face it. Northern Ireland is rubbish because only 4 people live there. You are all boring sad imbeciles who should get a job and stop arguing over the definition of Great Britain. Or should that be United Kingdom. Lets face it England is the only one of the four countries which even matters.

I'm actually from England and think that sort of opinion is appalling. I think you'll find that we live in a United Kingdom of which none of the countries are currently better than an another despite obvious historical discrepancies. Get with the times, England is no longer great. If you think we're all boring then why did you bother yourself with reading/commenting, evidently you are either socially inept or are equally as boring. Sporcle is about educating oneself, if you refuse to do so then go elsewhere. In conclusion Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are all important parts of our nation even if people are to ignorant/arrogant to notice that.

@Sam, sadly you've fallen for one of the two classic blunders of Sporcle. The first is to start a land war in Asia, and the second is to actually pay attention to : .

Ok I'm not trying to be stupid or ingnorant here, I'm just curious. Why isn't Australia an acceptable answer? Is it because it's more of a continet or whatever? If anyone can answer my question I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Granted, it's from wikipedia, but it seems Australia has a little over 40% of the people in #25. They are ranked 53rd worldwide.

Zach Harris, If the quiz uses population densities as a guide, i assume this is why Australia is not on the list. It's a massive country and as far as i know it only has a popluation of 2.6 while somewhere like the Isle of Man has a population density of 134. try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population_density if its any use.

@Lulu: No, the quiz just uses absolute population. The reason Australia isn't on the list is that, although it's huge, there aren't actually all that many people living there.

@Eduardo: Check out the link to the CIA World Factbook given in the blurb above the quiz. The populations used are 2008 estimates, which put the Ukraine in 27th place (it looks like 29th in the table because that includes the whole world and the European Union). The Ukraine has around 2.4M fewer people than South Korea so it seems unlikely that the Ukraine was ahead of South Korea recently, even though the population of the Ukraine is falling (0.651% per year) and South Korea and South Africa are rising (0.269% and 0.828% per year). Burma (26th place) is also rising (0.8% per year) and about 1.8M ahead of the Ukraine.

Are we going to get most populous nations for each continent? Maybe one quiz with the top 5 from each continent.
