My parents had a record of this. It scared me to death as a small child, but I still loved to listen to it.

"strings" is pretty generic, although I'm not sure how else to signify the whole string section. I tried all of the strings individually, and none would work.

That's the problem with Peter and The Wolf: Too much sax and violins for the kids.

Great idea for a quiz, but some of the answers are kind of vague.

Very nice quiz, this was very nice story I must say. @John Lambeth. It's actually pretty hard quiz once you notice, but to some others it's just too easy, and to some it is too hard. You probably think it's way too easy and wortheless. Please don't say things like that right off.

When the Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays this for kids, the first musicians for each instrument acts it out. The musician playing the cat's instrument wears cat slippers, the musician playing the duck's instrument wears a Donald Duck hat, and so on.

Considering the first four characters make up the majority of the woodwind section, that seems a rather odd choice for the hunters. I can't imagine piccolo, cor anglais and bass clarinet (and possibly contrabassoon) to be all that intimidating. I always remember listening to this as a kid though... so many primary school music lessons.

"Strings", "horns" and "woodwinds" are a bit broad compared to the other four, which are specific instruments. I know this is how it works in the arrangement, but perhaps make answers such as "violin" acceptable for "strings", etc.?

Yeah, "horns" came up when I typed "french horn", but "strings" didn't come up for any individual stringed instrument.

That's correct Catherine_F. That's how the piece works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_and_the_Wolf

brass should work for horns (especially if strings works for Peter)

I'm not a huge fan of this quiz-- several of them aren't instruments, but rather whole groups of instruments. I'm not saying the quiz is wrong, but it doesn't work so well.

@raisingfear101: Why do you think anyone cares that you've never heard of it? Why do you think that the users of a site dedicated to knowledge are interested in hearing about your ignorance of this subject? Would you mark me up or down if I commented `Never heard of these guys' on an NBA/MLB/NFL/NHL quiz?

Brings back great childhood memories...Stirling Holloway as narrator...rather scary especially the wolf's snarl...and now that I think of it, Peter's skipping little theme is played on several stringed instruments not just one.

Hello all! Thought I'd clarify that the French horn is a name that is commonly used for the "horn". The part of the orchestra containing the trumpet, trombone, tuba (along with others) is called the brass section, not the horn section. When one hears of the "horn", it means the French horn. This is a good quiz, by the way; it shows how composers can teach young folks to enjoy the classical music.

Good timing - I just listened to a Peter & the Wolf CD with my 5-year-old yesterday. He jumped in my lap and shivered when the wolf crept in and cheered when Peter caught the wolf - very cute to watch!

You forgot "Weird Al" Yankovic's adaptation of Peter and the Wolf, in which the part of "Bob the Janitor" was played by the accordion.

I couldn't put my finger on the grandfather. I knew the sound, but couldn't remember the instrument. When I was trying bass drum for the hunters (I was only 5 when I saw it, so that's what I thought it was), my little brother came over to bug me and happened to press 'O,O,N' and gave me the answer. Sometimes having little brothers are good after all.

When I was a kid I had a version narrated by Patrick Stewart. I still remember the "kettle drums" that represented the hunters. I'm glad sporcle accepted that as an answer.

@moegoldberg: "Strings" works for Peter because his theme is played by the entire string section (violin, viola, cello & bass). Most likely, "brass" doesn't work for the wolf because its theme is played by 3 French horns, not by the entire brass section. The sound the French horns make is pretty distinct from that of the other brass instruments like trumpets or tuba, so it seems fair enough to require French horns for the wolf. (But I agree that it would be nice to give people "strings" if they type in "violin" for Peter).

@melissa - I disagree. It's fine as it is. As you said Peter is played by the whole string section, so typing in "violin" is wrong. Leave the quiz alone please! It's easy enough as it is!

classic :) i love peter and the wolf. for whoever's interested: the first time peter's theme is heard it's on a violin, but he's represented throughout by the whole string section. i teach this every year!
