I always spell Papua New Guinea incorrectly- (I spell it Papau New Guinea). I was wondering why that wasn't on there and I thought I had the spelling right that time.

Yeah, because they each only border one country.

Love the quiz, just not a fan of giving the neighboring country, as that tips you on DR/Haiti and Ireland/UK.

Yeah, most I missed are some of the highest ranking, but I got all those crazy split islands...except the UK. How could I possibly get Ireland but not UK? I have no idea.

This is one of those games where you miss the obvious ones. I forgot about Portugal completely, whereas for some reason I got Brunei.

@Burton Northern Cyprus is difficult to include for anumber of reasons. for one, its sovereignty is only recognized by one country- turkey. even if others recognized it, its sovereingty would be questioned as well because it is occupied by a large Turkish force to protect its claim to independence.

LOL. I guessed Ireland, not realizing it bordered Russia only slightly, but for some reason failed to guess UK. I now ask that you all downvote me for my idiocy. 12/17

For some reason it didn't occur to me to enter both countries in the case of shared islands (Ireland/UK, Haiti/DR), so I got Ireland and Haiti, but missed both the UK and the Dominican Republic! Big facepalm moment on my part.

I miss Cyprus. the island is divided into 2 parts: 1 part is the state Cyprus, the other part belongs to Turkey: e.d. Cyprus has Turkey as only neighbour

i dont think we shud have Cyprus as an answer or even as a bonus... the part claimed to be soveriegn country of northern Cyprus is forcefully occupied by Turkey and hence Cyprus has no neighbour. As we are not considering the dependents, considering occupied territories will be wrong.

Neighbouring is spelled with a u. I always get confused looking at American spelling, thinking they've spelled it wrong by accident.

@john: There was a long discussion about Cyprus on the island nations quiz. In the end, I decided I wouldn't have put it as a bonus there if I was writing the quiz again.

@Rhys: Actually, they've spelt it `wrong' on purpose, in the sense that the removal of the `u' from words like `colour' and `neighbour' was a deliberate act on the part of Noah Webster and others. It was all part of an attempt to create a distinctively American spelling, to differentiate from the stinky imperialist Brits.

I was going to make mention of how I only missed the two most popular answers, and how i feel a fool for it, but I am incredibly hearted to see that loads of other people are in the same boat! Here's to people with great specialist knowledge but who still miss the blindindly obvious!

OK, I missed half-a-dozen (I'm sure half these countries didn't exist when I was at school!), but the one that irked most was Monaco - because I spent yesterday afternoon watching the F1 GP!
