Why yes, yes it is. Otherwise, fun quiz. Good idea, and (aside from that hiccup) a nice variety of nations and languages.

Should Tagalog count for the Philippines? I'm not sure if they are the same language or not, but I knew a person from the Philippines once and they told me they spoke Tagalog. Maybe one is a dialect of the other or something.

according to wikipedia, filipino is based on tagalog, but the two languages are distinct. filipino is the official language. i was going to request that tagalog be accepted until i looked it up.

I had no idea there was a second "u" in Portuguese. Missed out on a couple answers because of that...

We just wanted you to be doubly sure that you knew the official language of Liechtenstein, now that you have it down, we have changed the quiz.

I have finally been moved to register in order to express my bitter disappoinment over Tagalog not being accepted. Changed my possible 21/24 to a 20/24 (I wasn't going to get the other three, no way no how). To add insult to injury, I had given up and was in the process of typing filipino when I ran out of time. (Shakes fist at Sporcle gods.)

Why is Filipino spelt with an F when the country is spelt PH? I've never really thought about it before now.

@Journey2688: I don't know about that. I think there are more Spanish speaking countries than Dutch speaking countries out there. I could be wrong. Spanish seems like more of a gimme than Dutch. At least from my perspective. Have you spent time in the Netherlands or in a largely Dutch speaking area? Perhaps your perspective is colored by this.

Great quiz - definitely room for a sequel. Annoyed that I couldn't spell Amharic (kept trying Americ, which looked way too much like America).

I think Journey2688 refers to the fact that Dutch IS the language of the Netherlands, while Panama has Spanish as official language because they used to be a colony of Spain. Had no idea that the official language of Andorra was Catalan. After French and Spanish didn't work I just took a guess because I knew it was spoken relatively nearby around Barcelona.

@Journey2688 - I'm sure there are plenty of people who are unaware that there is such a thing as the Dutch language, and assume that in the Netherlands people speak French and/or German.

@Onno: I knew a lot of people were gonna get tripped up on Andorra but the capital has a Spanish and or Catalan name so I was able to narrow it down from there. I don't know why Panama was so tough for a lot of people unless you simply don't know where it is on the map. *shrug*

To those asking the difference between Tagalog and Filipino, most Filipinos consider them the same language and they usually call it Tagalog. They only refer to the language as Filipino is when they speak to a non-Filipino

french northern catalonia has twice the number of catalan speakers andorra has. spanish catalonia has a catalan speaking population about 75 times that of andorra. all of those very localized languages seem rather interesting, but painstakingly difficult to learn.

Never thought I'd do so well (24/24), not even sure how I knew about the official language of Ethiopia. Plenty of opportunities for numerous sequels, in fact I think a quiz with every country and their official languages would be fantastic. Just like the flags of the world quiz.

@Spog: As it was explained to me, the Philippines is named after King Philip, thus the Ph. Filipino comes from the Spanish term Las Islas Filipinas which is what some explorer called it around the same time. The Ph term is used for nouns, the F term is used for adjectives. Why they didn't just pick one and go with it, I have no idea.
