| Until now, having read the various arguments here, on Wikipedia, and other places, I would have concluded that Melekeok is the best answer to the question, "What is the capital of Palau?"
I've searched the few Palau government pages that exist, including the http://www.visit-palau.com site mentioned, and none of them definitively says what the capital of Palau is, or if it even has a capital. The Palau "The Senate" page on http://www.palaugov.net/ gives an address of Ngerulmud, Melekeok, but doesn't explicitly say that Ngerulmud is the capital.
So, I wrote to several of the government workers' e-mail addresses on the main government site (http://www.palaugov.net/). An administrative assistant in the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Industries, and Commerce (whose address is listed as "Ngerulmud, Palau") just wrote back to me (27 July 2010) and said, "The capital of Palau is called Ngerulmud, Melekeok and yes Palau does have a designated capital." |
