Re Evan: Not quite. Teams like the Duke Blue Devils, Marquette Golden Eagles, and Texas Tech Red Raiders aren't on the list.

Naming your team 'Orange' must be a real pain for the cheerleaders.

I recently realized there are multiple pronunciations for orange. Some have pointed out that or-ange could rhyme with doorhinge. A friend of mine pointed out that he pronounces it arr-inj. I just go for the monosyllabic ornge. This really has nothing to do with nothing, but you reminded me Taylor.

I don't know why i tried this one. My husband is the college sports guy, not me. Oh well, interesting anyway.

any chance of taking "Irish" for "Fighting Irish" and "Illini" for "Fighting Illini"? I went to U of Illinois and we normally referred to the team as the Illini, no matter how "fighting" they were

...yeah, just like the sioux. we more commonly call ourselves the sioux, fighting sioux is just the "full" name. example: "are you going to the sioux game tonight?" ...however, it was nice to see both ND teams on there :D

North Texas has two nicknames, the other being the Eagles, and they can't seem to decide which one to choose.

North Texas, at least basketball and football, changed to "Mean Green" a few years ago in honor of Mean Joe Greene. And maybe make North Dakota and Presbyterian bonus answers, since they're not officially D-I yet. Presbyterian's playing a D-1 schedule at least, I believe ND has to next year.

@tfeely: Presbyterian is in the Big South for Division 1 Basketball... and North Dakota is in the Division 1 Independents...

The Fighting Sioux nickname may no longer be. Within a year or two, maybe three, the name may change...due to "controversy." And yes, North Dakota is a D1 school, this is our first year of D1 competition (in all sports other than hockey).

Much more difficult than I thought it would be! :) It inspired me to make this quiz: http://www.sporcle.com/games/Esme/ncaa_color_team_names Thanks for the idea! :)

If you include women's teams, you would get the Hawaii Wahine and the USC Women of Troy (and the UIUC Flying Illini).

well first of all, daHOOK...women shouldn't even be allowed in sports let alone this list. So minus 1 for you....secondly, women of troy are not sanctioned by the university OR the NCAA...so minus 2 (someone help me out i can only give her minus 1...). 3rdly You're confusing UIUC with the fighting illini...common mistake because they are already on the board..nevertheless you are banned for 1 week from commenting on any other lists. You've been sporcled

I took the quiz twice because I could have shot myself for some of the ones I missed the first time. I mean, Fighting Irish? midshipmen? Two of the best known. Anyway, I got 19 the second time and still missed a few I should have gotten.

Unfortunately, the University of North Dakota has decided to retire the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo and are given one more year (this upcoming season) to wear the logo until a new nickname and logo have to be used.

@fsu211022: UIUC women don't fight, they fly. If you read my comment, you would have noticed it began "If you include women's teams,". And if you couldn't figure it out, UIUC is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. (Yes, they have a university, not just a basketball team.) FSU is, of course, the Bulldogs, which ends in S and is not included because they are division II in all sports except hockey. www.ferrisstatebulldogs.com

Hate to continue to the badgering here, but where is William and Mary? and while North Dakota is still using the nickname, include Fighting Sioux.

Tainted... If I type too fast the name isn't taken... Plus a lot of them come up before the full name is typed, so I have to go back and delete the last letter I type before going on to the next name.
