42/54. Not bad for someone who hasn't watched hockey in almost ten years.

50/54. A bit too easy in the sense that there are a lot of multiple winners. Type in four names (Harvey, Orr, Bourque and Lidstrom) and you already have half the list.

It's really a shame that Doug Harvey is only known by 18%. I'd put him in the top 10 NHL players in history. Definitely the best defensive defenseman in history. Only Orr was a better overall defenseman.

Bobby Orr changed the way defensemen play the position. True legend.

Good point. Harvey would NEVER win the award today unfortunately. If you don't have at least decent numbers in terms of goals and assists, you don't get considered. There should be a separate award for defensive d-men so their important contributions can be honored.

Nice to see the NHL getting some real love on Sporcle. It seems to be ignored everywhere else (I'm still upset that hockey is shown on VERSUS instead of ESPN where it belongs...the VS announcers are terrible....).

Forgive my lack of hockey knowledge, but why does it seem the same person wins it for several yeasr until someone else comes along and wins it for several more years?

@ Cocky - If that player is the best defenceman in the leauge, why not give it to him?

@cocky, millar1987 - at this point, the league will give the award to the biggest name. Bourque, Orr, Harvey, Lidstrom. These were of course probably four of the best five defenseman of all time. But has lidstrom really been the best defenseman 6 of the last 7 years? no way. it's the same with the vezina and roy and brodeur. they just give it to the currently most recognized defenseman.

I know it's a minor quibble, but the Norris Trophy doesn't go to the "best defensive player of the year", it goes to the best all-around Defenseman (in other words, the best player at that specific position).

They won't give it to the best defensive defenceman because there really aren't defensive stats by which to judge. It's hard to figure out who that would be without watching every game of the season.

Yeah. Defensive play is more subjective. It's about positioning on the ice, making the right play to get the puck out of your end and recognizing what the other team wants to do on offense. You could tally things like blocked shots and body checks but that's about it.

if you ask me, the best defenseman is the guy who spends the most time in the penalty box! Of course, if he spends all his time in there, then who's out there on the ice being the league's best defenseman...

@ Peter. you can't compare Lidstrom with Roy and Brodeur...because Roy and Brodeur are the two greatest goalies to ever play. Plus Roy excelled at a high level at the end of his career, just as Brodeur is doing now. I think the Norris Trophy is a skewed vote in some years as i feel they look at offense more than defense...but sometimes they get it right.

Last year when Chara won was rediculous. Mike Green beat him in every single category, offensive and defensive. Phaneuf also had the most hits, blocked shots, best takeaway/giveaway ratio in the league. Thus proves those who are saying its skewed are correct.

Green sucks at playing defense. He scores points but he's a liability; he needs someone out there just to cover up his gaffes. Chara is a monster who owns games. He's impossible to beat 1 on 1, and he has a 100+ mph slapshot.

Paul Coffey was robbed for so many seasons. The guy was the offensive catalyst for the Oilers, bringing the play from his own zone to the offensive zone in literally a few strides, which allowed the Oilers to be the powerhouse they were. Notice how their offence fell off (compared to when Coffey was with the team) after he left? Some say he was a defensive liability, but a good defence is a good offence, and when you have a guy with a great pass AND who can carry the puck out by himself, you've got a defensive gem.

the fact that scott stevens never won a norris trophy is a crime...he was only the best defenseman in the league for about 15 years
