	Gretzky wasn't in any of the drafts. He was in the WHA and when the WHA went out of business, the Oilers joined the NHL.

	Guys who go on to become great players in any sport often get passed over by teams who had an opportunity to take them. Sam Bowie was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan, the Pittsburgh Steelers cut Johnny Unitas and Martin Brodeur didn't get picked until late in the first round in 1990.

	late first round in 1990 was pretty good for a goalie, Patrick Roy wasn't drafted until the 3rd round in his draft, teams didn't pick goalies high in those days, Rick Dipietro was a surprise first overall pick and it angered a lot of people actually, but oh well look how that turned out for the Isles...but your point is valid enough. i was doing great starting from stamkos to phillips...it went downhill from there except for the obvious ones...been waiting a long time for this quiz so YAY. :) love it. thanks sporcle.

	I'm pretty sure that 1979 should be the Colorado Rockies instead of the Avalanche who didn't exist until 1996.

	I just feel like I should mention again that the Colorado Avalanche did not exist in 1979. That was the Colorado Rockies.

	Man some of the drafting in the 70's ended up being terrible! Greg Joly - 1974 finished his career with 97 points, Rick Green 1976 - 263 pts But I guess Patrik Stefan was no superstar (188 pts)

	Jason, Rick Green may have not turned out to be the offensive defenceman that Washington was hoping for, but he did turn out to be a great defensive defenceman.

	all three of those picks were pretty good! Look at what Philly gave up for Lindros - Forsberg, Hextall, Simon, Ricci, Duchesne, Huffman and 2 first rounders. The result directly or indirectly? 2 Cups for the club (as the Avs) and 0 for Lindros and Philly. Its a shame Quebec never got to experience the benefit of this....Colorado won the cup the year after the left Quebec.

	i wasn't thinking at first about just typing in the last names, but when i tried to type "steven stamkos" it didnt register. when i typed "stamkos" it came up as "steve". really? otherwise it was a pretty good quiz.

	@big_papi...You mentioned it was 'ashame Quebec never got to experience the benefit'. They never would have if the club had stayed in town. The Avs won their Cups (especially the first one) in large part because of Patrick Roy. The Habs would've never dealt Roy to the Nordiques, so unless the team had moved to Denver, the club would not have won Lord Stanley's mug.

	@nashedpotatoes, Alexandre Daigle is most famous for saying "no one remembers who was drafted second". He was a bust, and Chris Pronger was drafted second overall that year.

	@faber: That continued into the 80s. The guy who was taken first in 1980 was selected ahead of Denis Savard, Larry Murphy, and Paul Coffey, who went third, fourth, and sixth. In 1982, Scott Stevens and Phil Housley went fifth and sixth, and were better picks than that bust of a defenseman who went first. 1983 may have been the worst. Right after the North Stars first overall pick went: Sylvain Turgeon, Pat LaFontaine, Steve Yzerman, Tom Barrasso, John MacLean, Russ Courtnall. Slightly later in that first round went Cam Neely and Dave Gagner. Sixth and ninth in 1986 were Vincent Damphousse and Brian Leetch too.
