	Amazing the difference in population betweeen NYC and the next largest city. And that, for one of the most populous states in the country, there's not another city outside of NYC that has even half a million people. I would've thought No. 2 was bigger than that.

	@ Ernest: New York City by itself has more people than 39 states. If you look at the Historical US Population Quiz, you'll see that Buffalo used to be one of the top 10 most populated cities in the country. Now it ranks around 70th.

	If you include suburbs, Rochester and Buffalo have metro areas with populations exceeding 1 million. I grew up in suburban Rochester, and there is no way I would ever live downtown, and most people around me share those feelings.

	I'm very disappointed in myself. I've lived in Upstate NY all of my life and missed 9 (mostly downstate). I was really looking forward to this quiz, too :(

	@GeoExpert - no, it would not. Townships on long island are large administrative districts that in many ways act as counties. The township I am from, Huntington, has a population of about 200,000. This list would have to be completely redone if you use the term "town." Maybe "incorporated cities and villages" would work? But towns would absolutely fail.

	The village word should only be used if it is extremely small, and 30,000 is not small enough. Still, cities would be the best word for this quiz.

	Geoexpert: Towns, especially on long island, are not towns in the rest of the country. In Nassau County (southern shore of Long Island) there are three townships. The 'Town' of Hempstead is actually 22 incorporated villages, including the 'village' of Hempstead. I live in a village of 10000+ people within the town of Hempstead. We have our own mayor, school board, etc, etc. If the Town of Hempstead were treated as one city it would have a population of over 750,000 people!

	I live in northern Jersey, ten miles from Manhattan. I got five. I should've had two, or perhaps three, more, but still... I've never heard of four or five of them.

	To illustrate my point, Long Beach, Valley Stream, Freeport, and Hempstead are all 'villages' in the Town of Hempstead. Adding to the confusion are the 35 or so 'hamlets' that also make up the 'town.' Many of these 'hamlets' are far bigger than the villages. For instance Levittown is a hamlet but has over 50,000 residents, and is more populous than the village of Hempstead. I think Levittown should be included as an answer for this quiz.

	@Geoexpert - I understood your point; there is no good word for this, but to call these "cities" would be incorrect. I was just elaborating that to call them "towns" would be even worse. It should be "most populated cities and villages in the State of New York." And Levittown is not incorporated, so it should not count. There is no legal entity of "Levittown."

	If "cities" is the best name for the quiz, then perhaps you should restrict the answers to only those places classified as cities in New York. These can be found here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_New_York

	I think this is a great quiz, but due to the confusion about what defines a city in New York, census designated places should be included on the list alongside incorporated cities and villages.

	@pr and others: This quiz includes all jurisdictions counted within the State of New York for census purposes. The word "city" is used for ease only, not to suggest that some jurisdictions are excluded from consideration. If you want to know whether certain places are officially considered cities as opposed to villages, hit the census link at the top and take a look.
