| They are called the "modern" modes, because the ones that were used in ancient greece had similar names but are actually unrelated. Of course, "modern" is relative, since these ones were first used in the Middle Ages.
Also, I seem to recall hearing that some of the mode names were swapped around to make them easier to remember (Dorian staring on D, Aeolian starting on A), but I'm not sure if that's true.
And one last thing, Ionian doesn't necessarily need to start on middle C as the quiz implies. |
