Doesn't Liberty Island fit the criteria? It is operated by the National Park Service.

Does anybody know how many of these are free? I known Great Smoky is, and I always heard that was the reason it was #1. Are any of the other 9 free?

@rockgolf: As you'll see from the source link, this is a list of the most visited national parks, not the most visited NPS units. (I admit I tried Lincoln Memorial myself)

@NCBerge - I think the biggest reason that Great Smoky is #1 is location. I'd bet that it's a days drive from 100 million people. All the ones in the west are much more remote my comparison. Grand Canyon and Yellowstone are really pretty remote, and even the ones in the West that are near to population centers don't have as many people to draw on as Great Smoky. I'm sure being free helps a little, but by far the major expense of visiting a national park is travel - gas, food, lodging, etc. - even at the expensive parks the cash you pay at the gate is, for most people, a small part of your total costs, so my guess is it's not a huge factor.

btw - Requiring the pluralization of "mountains" in Great Smoky is a little rough. I typed "Great Smoky Mountain National Park" and it didn't take it. I guess it's not wrong to refuse that, but it seems overly strict.

@NCBerge: #1 and #6 are free all year round and #10 is free from November to April inclusive each year. There's no fee to drive down US-191, which passes through #9, but you do need to pay to enter any other part of the Park.

@Disclaimer: Another reason why Great Smoky Mountains NP gets so many visitors is presumably that US-441 passes straight through the park so one would assume that anyone who travels down that road is counted as a visitor. (Indeed, the reason that the park is free to enter is that a condition of the transfer of ownership of that road from the State of Tennessee was that no fee or toll would ever be charged to travel on the road.) The passage of US-191 through #9 might boost the numbers there, but, then again, they might just be counting the number of people who pay the entrance fee, in that case.

I thought Glacier would make the list, such an amazing park, and easy to hit on the same vacation as Yellowstone.

I typed in "Great Smoky Mountains," "Rocky Mountain" and "Grand Teton," and it wouldn't accept any of those replies.

@jUNKIEd: Cuyahoga Valley was designated a NP in 2000, so even though I spent much of the late 90s hiking it, I still missed it :(

Everglades should count for the same reason that the smoky mts are because alligator alley goes right through, and its a really busy road

@Supernuke: It does accept Grand Teton. You don't need to type out `National Park' for any of the answers.

Biggest surprises for not being on the list: Shenandoah, Everglades, Mt. Rainier, all of which are near large population centers.

@Iceberg: I've just written a quiz for the least-visited, though I doubt that it, like the Parks in it, will be very popular. :-) Full NPS visitor stats are at http://www.nature.nps.gov/stats/viewReport.cfm for anyone who's interested.

@ncBERGE - Cuyahoga Valley is definitely free, as I work about 500 yards from it and travel through it all the time. It's really not laid out in a way that would be condusive to establishing park entrance stations, as it has many roads running through it.

Great Smoky Mountains is the only major National Park of it's kind in the area, drawing people from many major metropolitan areas nearby. Yellowstone, Glacier, Mount Rainier, Zion and Bryce Canyon are more spectacular (just an opinion) but they are more remote. They need a quiz in which you simply name all the National Parks.

The three most guessed were also my only three guesses....and I don't know any US national parks apart from those. And where did I learn about one: Yogi Bear!
