One of the best quizzes I have taken in awhile. This was really fun and that time limit had me freaking out trying to think of as many teams as possible. 32/40.

Forbes cannot be right. I am pretty sure the Steelers are in the top 5. They have the biggest fan base.

a little more time would have been good, but great quiz. tested your mind. (although most of these teams -- knicks, texans -- haven't been good)

Erm.....when did the U.S. annex Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver? Great quiz otherwise, though.

Yeah, I am not a Steelers fan, but given the negotiations that almost materialized when the team was almost sold last year, they'd be top five, for sure. The Ravens more valuable? Not likely.

Great quiz, Ben, as always. @John: There's no way the Steelers fan base is bigger than the Cowboys or Patriots.

Just out of interest, what's the quoted `value'? Revenue? (And, yes, I know it's millions of US dollars. I'm asking millions of US dollars of what.)

@ Tobin: The hockey teams from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are part of the NHL which is based in the US. It would be the same as having the Blue Jays in the MLB or the Raptors in the NBA, they just didn't make the list.

Have you watched the Steelers play a road game? They always have a ton of fans at the game, even if they play across the country. I'm sure its close between Dallas and the Steelers, but definitely not the Patriots. More people hate the Patriots than like them.

Steelers have the largest fanbase because the steel mills all closed about the same time that they were good. People went all over the country looking for work but remaining Steelers fans. Only the Cowboys' rivals their fanbase in size. Patriots may seem like they have a large fanbase, but most Pats fans are flash-in-the-pans that showed up just recently that the Pats have started being good. You'd have been hard-pressed to find Patriots fans outside of Massachusetts in the 90s.

Got them all except the Ravens and Texans, and quite frankly, I'm astonished that those two are in the top 10. No Dolphins, Steelers, or Packers? Never would have imagined.

37/40 first try, 40/40 second, without having looked at the answers in between. It's actually pretty intuitive if you look at is as a combination of a) market size, b) fan intensity/loyalty and c) team success.

I was a bit confused as the quiz was "in the United States" but Canadian NHL teams appeared on the list.

davidr: Generally what these lists that Forbes puts out for sports franchise values measures is what the current owners of the team could get on the open market if they sold the team today. I'm not sure exactly how Forbes does it, because some team owners own a lot more than just the team itself (e.g., they also own the stadium or the practice facility or the parking concession, etc.).

To be honest, I was kind of surprised to see the Texans so high, and the Steelers not in the top ten.

i don't understand what the problem is with Canadian teams on the list! they are in te league and obviously three Canadian NHL teams make the top three! and frankly i'm surprised that the Raptors and Blue Jays arn't on the list for the same reason the Leafs are #1. I'd also like to point out that hockey is as much Candian sport if not more than an American sport

Brandon: The reason people are taking issue with the inclusion of Canadian teams is that the quiz specifically identifies it as, "the top 10 most valuable sports franchises per sport in the United States." Obviously, Canadian teams, whatever sport they may be in, are not in the United States.

I live in North Dakota and next to the Vikings who have the regional fanbase. I'd say the Steelers rival the Cowboys and Packers for number two for number of fans around here.

Very interesting quiz, and the time limit is perfect. I hit low-30s, but I forgot some easier ones (Dodgers, for example) because I ran out of time... yet another minute or two would make it too easy by giving us too much time to just guess every team. Well done.

In regards to largest fanbase, I do think the Packers are being overlooked. Dunno where anyone ranks, but I think they should at least be in the discussion. Also, I'd like to see Least valuable sports franchises next. That would give all those Florida teams some show.

Number of fans would only be a small part of the overall formula, and an indirect part at that. Like someone else alluded to earlier in the thread, what affects this list more are things like revenue-producing stadiums (naming rights, etc.), multimillion-dollar marketing deals, television exposure, the size of their respective markets, and so on.

I don't think value of franchise should matter but how well the team as a whole plays to win games! And.....Go Steelers! Hello negatives lol
