Is this worldwide or just in the US? It seems bizarre that Sony isn't one.

Yeah, Sony is a pretty big omission. And what about Visa? Odd list.

Yeah, Sony and Visa missing are headscratchers. I would add KFC as another - more stores in China now than in the US (though it's not anywhere near the bizarre overlook that the other two are).

interesting list. two comments: starbuck's being listed as fast food messed me up, but i suppose "coffe" would be too obvious. second, the bonus answer is missing a category. i nominate "procrastination destination"

I got very confused with the technology classification. Some sort of distinction between traditional engineering (#2) and others (#1 3 6 7) would have helped. And how many of these financial institutions are still solvent?

Gillette has made their fortune on shaving foams that are proven to be less effective than soapy water, and razor blades that don't shave as close as the razor's of fifty years ago. Amazing what you can achieve if you have Roger Federer threatening to serve a tennis ball at your head.

I agree that missing Sony is just weird: it's a huge brand across electronics and entertainment. I really have to question Millward Browm Optimor's methodology, given their conclusions that Cisco is a bigger world-wide brand than Sony and Porsche bigger than GM. And Royal Bank of Canada (who don't even trade under that name!) a bigger brand than HSBC. Or... But mainly, I guess I'm just sour at my low score.

Oh, and no oil companies. (Still sour, having only improved my score by twelve at the second attempt.)

no oil companies, no sony, and i really thought that more TV networks would be up there - fox broadcasting, BBC, etc. silly me.

I must've tried Sony 5 times because I couldn't believe it wasn't on there. Nintendo not being on there was another surprise. Well, hooray for google. It's already become a verb.

I too was very surprised Sony isn't on the list. For those interested, if Sony was included, it would have been ranked in the low 100's. The study gives the Sony brand a value of $6.1 billion. Compare this to a value of over $86 billion for Google and over $11.8 for Samsung.

@BigThing: OK, I've never understood people who make this kind of comment. `Sony' didn't work the first time so you try again, just in case you mis-typed it. But why the third, fourth and fifth tries? Did you expect the website to turn round and say, `Well, since you're so insistent, I'll give you the point'?

@R: Not necessarily. There probably aren't many Sporclers in China so a Chinese company could have huge brand value from the Chinese market alone, while being hardly known in the west. Case in point: #5.

@Davidr: I don't think GM is as well known as the individual parts of the brand, i.e. Chevy and Ford, which do make the list.

The methodology definitely seems dubious. Apparently they're trying to isolate the effects of the brand as opposed to "other reasons" people might give money to that brand, but it just seems bizarre and perverse. AIG's brand isn't worth dirt at this point.

GPS:

Why are Chase and JP Morgan listed seperately? The company has been JPMorganChase for many many years. Merrill Lynch is backrupt and no longer exists. AIG is near bankrupt and over a third of the company is now owned by the US Government.

@johnlk: AIG's brand probably has little value at the moment but this data is from the calendar year 2007, before everything went pear-shaped.

What a brilliant quiz. We sat and did this in our office today and could only get 48! I'm also surprised that Sony didn't make it, and I can't believe Louis Vuitton is higher than the likes of Amex, Intel or Amazon. Says a lot about the world today I suppose.

royal bank of canada dont call themselves royal bank of canada anymore, its all 'RBC'. ...and Rolex isnt on a list of most valuable brands?

@spartie: RBC is an accepted answer for the Royal Bank of Canada. Rolex would have made the list if it extended into the low 100's. It's the next-listed luxury brand.

@GPS: Chase and JP Morgan are separate because the quiz is about brands, not companies. Merrill Lynch and AIG are there because the data is from the calendar year 2007.

I seriously question this list. It seems very odd to me how Harley-Davidson is supposed to be more valuable than Volkswagen. Harley might be well known. But the profits are nowhere near those of VW. And what else does value reflect than the possibility to turn a good name into money.

@davidr: Well, I don't know what to tell you. When I'm out of ideas I keep entering things just to keep my train of thought going. I did not really think anything. Also, there is a difference between not understanding the content of a comment and not understanding the person who makes it, no?

@ Tirion - I see a lot of people driving a Volkswagen. And the profit margins on cars a lot bigger than on t-shirts.
