I speak Klingon. Why isn't that here. There is approxamitely 14 Klingon speakers for every man, woman and child in india. Most of thhem are secret though. They don't want their geekiness to be known. Reveal yourself Klingons. Help us revolutionise and cleanse the world. POWER

Since we're going to be nerds about it, what about Latin? I mean Spanish (3), Portuguese (6), French (19) and Italian (20) are all just regional dialects right?

The quiz is first languages though. Not many of us speak Klingon as a first language. Nice point about Latin though.

Magister: French and Spanish are further apart than English and German, I speak all 4. Romance is a family of languages, not a dialect, spanish actually has a lot of arabic words. Klingon has 56 billion speakers on Kronus alone, plus over a 100 billion across the empire as a second tongue, if they don't want there skulls crushed, but I think the quiz meant on earth

@ :, Yeah, I see that. Although I could sit back and say that English and German are just regional dialects of Germanic, and therefore should be more closely related than French and Spanish. I won't, though, that would be mean.

Well, I've never heard of them before. Maybe us folks in the Western World just don't know that much. I mean, you've heard of Wu, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi before? Good for you.

Telugu and marathi are spoken very popular in india. Maybe nearly million. 'Panjabi' should be counted! Just another transcription of that name. But I've NOT heard anyone call it 'Javanese' before. I always call 'indonesian' or 'bahasa indonesian'. I think Javanese may be the old version of it. (and only spoken in Jawa area, not for all indonesian islands)

I would have thought that cantonese would beat out Wu, and that gujarati and urdu would beat out telugu and marathi.

@siukong: I though the exact same thing. I googled "cantonese" because I was convinced I was simply misspelling it, but I turned up the Wikipedia page for Chinese that told me Wu is the 2nd most common Chinese dialect, and Cantonese is 4th. You learn something new every day! :P

@John2, Latin is dead, since there are no native speakers. It is no-one's first language.

@John2: Thank you. @Butters: Please remember that Latin, while not spoken nearly as much anymore, as long as there are teachers teaching and learners learning, it will not have died.

I was a little surprised that French wasn't higher in the list, since they colonised so many countries. I'm guessing it's because they don't meet the "first language" criteria: many countries in Africa have French as an official language, but most people who learn it would have learnt the language native to their area first.

Javanese and Indonesian are completely different languages, and so are Wu and Cantonese.
