Yeesh, that was rough. I got 11, which I see is pretty good (compared to the average), and I still feel stupid. The only two I got that were particularly tough (out of the top ten most-guessed at the moment) were Houston's, which was a guess, and the one in Massachusetts, where I used to live. Still, I liked this one- not every quiz can be simple, and not every quiz should be.

Fun quiz! Now let's get Least Populous, so we can get some Nebraska counties on there. I think our Arthur County has about 400 people. Of course, that quiz would be impossible because no one has ever heard of those counties.

And on a completely unrelated note: I like what you've done with the simple public profiles and stats, Sporcle gods. It's a very nice touch. Next step- naturally, since I always whine about it- is letting me make quizzes. But still, good job.

I had no hope at these if a. the large nearby city didn't have the same name as the county or b. there wasn't a popular tv show featuring the county. Using that logic you can still get half of them.

Orange, Bronx and Cook were the only ones I know. The rest I just guessed major cities. So long as county names having nothing to do with mailing addresses and you only see about a 50-mile radius of county names on weather radar for storm alerts, I don't imagine people will do that well on this quiz

Can someone explain to me why people avoid naming answers in their comments? We all know that the comments will contain spoilers, so if we don't want to see them, we read them after the quiz. And those of us who want to cheat have plenty of other ways to cheat. So what gives? It's obnoxious to read a comment that says "I was surprised by #23" and have to jump to the top to see what they're referring to. [stepping off my soapbox]

And now I'm curious how many people can actually pronounce the counties (particularly since most national news sources have trouble with several of these!)

I also got Miami-Dade because of the 2000 election shenanigans. Isn't Wayne County now called Jayne County?

Thanks to Dexter, I got Miami-Dade county. Other than that, most of my correct guesses were major cities and New York City boroughs.

26/30. I missed four of the California counties. I was born in Middlesex (MA), currently live in Harris (TX) and used to live in Wayne (MI).

Got 27. Used to live in TX (Harris Co.) but never knew Fort Worth's county. After hearing San Antonio's county by name on the TV news several times, I was shocked the first time I learned how it was spelled! I would have guessed some of the northern NJ counties near NYC would have been up there but apparently they're not even close.

Many counties in the west are much larger than those in the east which is why the msjority of the most populous counties are in the west

@ The Snakes: If you are referring to the Hazzard County from "The Dukes of Hazzard," then that's in Georgia. Unfortunately there is no actual Hazzard County in the US. The one from the tv show was fictional.

Just out of curiosity, how is Bexar County pronounced? Those here commenting on it seem to be saying it's not pronounced as you would think from the spelling. My guess would be "BECKS are", or perhaps "throat wobbler mangrove." Sorry, I had to do that; but I am actually curious about the pronunciation.

@ Bretzky: I believe it's pronounced by native San Antonians just like the word "Bear," although the original Spanish pronunciation was probably something more like "BAY-har"

Small thing I noticed, that when you're doing the quiz instead of it saying x/y counties correct, it says x/y countRies correct :-) Not that I am blaming that for 5/30...

@Bretzky: Having grown up in central Texas, I can confirm that weizenugb's got the right pronunciation, although it can also slide to have a bit of a y sound in it, somewhere between "bear" the animal and "Bayer" the pain medication. The Spanish word was Bejar and it got anglicized to an x (don't ask me why, but that's what happens, just look at Tejas -> Texas) and so "BAY-har" is indeed the original Spanish pronunciation.
