Why is there no Louis xvii? After Napoleon and all the Louis' I was clueless but what a way to learn

I believe the Bourbons skipped using XVII because that would have acknowledged the death of Louis, Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin under the Reign of Terror. By skipping to XVIII, they honored the family with the illusion that the Dauphin actually ruled....evidence is he died, but *after* Louis XVI was beheaded, so technically he *was* king, for awhile, at least.

I think the boy who would have been Louis XVII was murdered when he was about ten years old during the French Revolution before he could take the throne after Louis XVI died.

I'm curious why the list starts with Charles II rather than with Charlemagne? After all, Charlemagne was the most significant of the Carolingian rulers (although history is not really my subject, so I may be really confused). Also, isn't Napoleon II missing? According to wikipedia, he was ruler for a tiny bit (although, like I said, history is not my subject - maybe I should go back to the TV quizzes now!)

@tcalleen: I think it's because Charlemagne (and the missing Carloman I and Louis I) were rulers of a much larger empire that included France. So they weren't Kings of France, as such. Napoleon II was only four years old when Napoleon I abdicated in his favour after losing the Battle of waterloo. At the time, Napoleon II was in Austria and it's not clear that he even knew that he'd become Emperor before Louis XVIII was restored to the throne about two weeks later.

Thanks, davidr. I guess I was thinking more "king of the franks" than "king of france".

I got all the Henry's, Louis's, Phillip's, and and Charles's... then I ran out of names. Apparently, there were no great lineage of Steve's.

I hope people don't call me "Just The Fat, Lazy, Mad Stammerer" when I die. That's not too much to ask, right?

I'd like an option that forces me to do them in chronological order. I think that would be useful for many of these type of quizzes - I'd learn more if I had to know which Louis came after which Philip instead of just typing as many of each name in as I can.

An optional 'in order' feature could be good, for once you have mastered the original.

Some of these nicknames are great. Louis XI the Prudent, the Universal Spider? ****ing brilliant. Other than typing Louis over and over, I was pretty clueless.

Louis XVII existed he just was never king. he died during the french revolution. After Napoleons downfall, during the congress of Vienna in 1815 when the European powers were deciding what to do with France so it didn't become too big a power again and also other territories (Napoleon really carved up Europe and when France fell they had to fix it all) they decided that "legitimate" rulers must be in charge (meaning those who came from already existing royal families). They chose Louis XVIII who was of the bourbon family but in order to legitimize his claim they had to give Louis XVII a title.

Informative quiz, thanks. Why doesn't it accept just "Hugh" for Hugh Capet? Capet's already there in the Dynasty column. I kept thinking, "I could have SWORN there was a Hugh Capet in there" and trying to figure out whether there was any other way to spell Hugh (or EEWGHH, as the French pronounce it)!

henry vi of england is considered by some to have been henri ii of france in the mid 15th century, but even by those that don't it makes the mext henrys to be one number higher

Great game, I have always found the French monarch interesting. Louis xvii was the son of the executed king and its believed he too was murdered, escaped in exile or was the "Man in the iron mask" It would be cool if you could go back to Clovis. But I understand Charlemagne ruled an area bigger than France including Austrasia and Neustria (Parts of Germany, Flanders and Burgundy) and the Ottonian kings of Western germany and the rhine valley took over here I think.

Love how most French kings were apparently very unimaginative in naming their progeny! The French people, on the other hand, appear to have been a lot more imaginative with the nicknames. ;)

Ugh, missed most of the earlier ones! My early medieval scholar self is acutely ashamed. But really, my knowledge ended with Charles the Bald and his Viking pals, spikes with Philip IV and Henry III-end.

yeah, I kept wondering why "Hugues Capet" wasn't working either, being a French student that's what I've always heard him called. I for some reason couldn't think of "Hugh" as the English and instead put "Hugo", figuring maybe that was the English equivalent... it's not that common of a name in French nowadays

too much kings missing, it would supposed to start in 496, or even before, as historian agreed to say that Clovis was the first " King of Franks "

I remembered Hugh Capet because of us learning about him one time in our history class and someone calling him "Hug Carpet".
