Hooray, finally an MLS quiz!
Nov 3rd, 2008 at 22:42 GMT
"Red Bull New York" should absolutely count.
Nov 3rd, 2008 at 22:50 GMT
I concur on Red Bull New York. It is the team's given name, modeled on Red Bull Salzburg.
Nov 3rd, 2008 at 22:56 GMT
Yeah, agreeing on Red Bull New York.
Nov 3rd, 2008 at 23:07 GMT
The MLS is great. Playoffs going on now. Great quiz!
Nov 3rd, 2008 at 23:17 GMT
I went to a New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo playoff game the other day, and about 1/6th of Giants Stadium was full. This is a great league and it really should get more attention.

Soccer is the gayest sport in the world, and you are all idiots for giving it any sort of attention. Until players quit diving all over the place the sport will never get any attention in the states. We are not a socialist country and we dont like socialist sports thank you very much.
Nov 4th, 2008 at 02:04 GMT
I'd also grant just "Chivas" for "Chivas USA," personally.
Nov 4th, 2008 at 02:41 GMT
marc, i suggest you keep up to date with current economic news :) if you don't like diving, why do you watch basketball, where a huge part of taking charges is flopping? seriously, if you don't like soccer, that is fine, but find a legit reason not to like it. also, no need to call us idiots.
Nov 4th, 2008 at 02:49 GMT
Damn you, idiosyncratic soccer naming conventions!

city name should be enough. mls sucks.
Nov 4th, 2008 at 04:08 GMT
I remember, when Kansas City received an MLS franchise, they dubbed themselves "The Wiz." That name lasted one season, I believe.
Nov 4th, 2008 at 05:32 GMT
the mls deserves more attention, i agree. But both Baseball and football are american conventions, so its an uphill battle for the mls
Nov 4th, 2008 at 17:57 GMT
Being British, I only got 5/14 and that's only because I'm an absolute football nerd (sorry, can I get away with calling it football here?) But why aren't LA Galaxy on here?
Nov 4th, 2008 at 19:11 GMT
@aaronw: you didn't spell out los angeles. if it hasn't been changed yet, "LA galaxy" ought to be allowed. no one says "los angeles galaxy". mark my words, one day MLS will rival european leagues. but not in my lifetime. maybe not even in my grandchildrens' lifetimes. but it'll happen.
Nov 4th, 2008 at 22:04 GMT
@radiosilence: Being from KC Metro, I remember the story quite well: essentially some parents went up in arms about the double meaning of the name and demanded a change. *sigh*
Nov 4th, 2008 at 22:05 GMT
@marc: really we're idiots? how do you feel about people that just come into a thread and blast people for doing something like? isn't that somewhat idiotic?
Nov 4th, 2008 at 22:07 GMT
i really would like to see more people pay attention to soccer. I don't mind watching it. if we can take various other things from foreign countries and american-ize them: why not with soccer?
Nov 5th, 2008 at 00:37 GMT
chivas is the actual name of a team in mexico, so chivas is not the same as chivas usa. san jose just rejoined the league…
Nov 5th, 2008 at 00:44 GMT
Speaking of the name issues, Kansas City had it easy compared to Houston...
Nov 5th, 2008 at 15:24 GMT
@gopaladins: I tried both and for some reason, NEITHER worked! I have to say, in a lot of other English people's views, you'll have to start calling it football instead of soccer first!
Nov 5th, 2008 at 17:29 GMT
@AaronW: Or just type "Galaxy." It works to have just the "mascot" on every sports quiz. And for those of you who have marked me down: Houston Name Controversy: http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/1/8/0/9/6/p180963_index.html

@Marc We are not a bigoted country and we do not like bigots. Grow up. Aside from that idiot, great quiz and fun comments.
Nov 6th, 2008 at 20:38 GMT
Marc, soccer is not a socialist sport. There are only five socialist countries in the world, none of them like it, and the only one that ever did (U.S.S.R.) did not invent it, it was the English and/or British who had the largest part of it.
Nov 6th, 2008 at 23:38 GMT
@Marc: And if you'd like further proof that soccer is not socialist, please google David Beckham's salary. Certainly spreading the wealth a little thick on one side, eh?
Nov 15th, 2008 at 08:55 GMT
Happy I managed to get all 14! I only see a little bit of the MLS this side of the pond!
Nov 17th, 2008 at 15:38 GMT
I really try and pay attention to the MLS, so i was dissapointed i only got 6. maybe would have got more if i hadn't convinced myself it was new england dynamo, and laughed at the thought of a team from Houston, dont ask me why. good quiz. maybe in time we can get the stadiums aswell

This may just be my own ignorance, but Toronto FC is in Canada NOT the US, so it should count as a bonus answer OR the (US) in the title of this quiz should be changed or removed.

Feb 15th, 2009 at 19:21 GMT
Ziggy - Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania never liked soccer? Really? Also worth noting that, because it really started out as a working class sport, the traditionally most important clubs have often been concentrated in areas where socialist parties are strong - the industrial north and midlands in England, Glasgow, the Ruhr area in Germany, Milan and Turin in Italy, etc.
Mar 22nd, 2009 at 22:31 GMT
It makes you type in the whole name for Seattle. It should just accept the nickname.
Apr 14th, 2009 at 08:10 GMT
100%! I feel that the MLS, and American football players in general, are underrated by Europeans and it's such a shame as there's some real talent. Shalrie Joseph, for example, is a superb defensive midfielder and Brad Guzan was superb before moving to Aston Villa. Donovan Ricketts is also looking like a fantastic prospect and who can forget the legend that is Brian McBride (one of the greatest headers of the ball)?
Apr 15th, 2009 at 18:21 GMT
@goonerlover66: shalrie joseph and donovan ricketts are not american, though they play in MLS. ricketts has played in england already. as you pointed out, brad guzan now plays in england, and mcbride played in england for years. sooooo, you're not really making your point very well.
Apr 15th, 2009 at 18:22 GMT
philadelphia, vancouver and portland should be added
Apr 22nd, 2009 at 20:37 GMT
We need an NASL quiz!
Apr 26th, 2009 at 04:02 GMT
eh...only got 6. i dont really watch soccer
May 10th, 2009 at 02:42 GMT
Philly, Portland, and Vancouver should be bonus answers.
