I forgot Bert Blyleven. I'm sure he wouldn't be too happy about that.

Would've gotten a 5th star from me had it been 1901-present, though some of the obscure guys (like the Q & U guy) were 1900s and I've still never heard of them.

Difficult but fun. Did anyone else guess Welch thinking Bob Welch and accidentally get Mickey?

I can't believe there's never been a lasting starting pitcher with an 'I' last name.

Isringhausen?? That's the best we can do for "I"? Must be a MLB conspiracy against the 9th letter of the alphabet.

There are a lot of great pitchers that have their last name start with "M", as I've noticed from this quiz.

Isringhausen? He was a closer for a long time, surprised that there is no one else with the name beginning with 'I' with more wins.

Yes! I got all of them. P.S. I don't like sports! How did I do that? Cy Young holds the record with 511 wins. Does Isringhausen really only have 45? Great Quiz Sporcle!

I like these alphabet quizzes a lot. An even tough challenge though would be by uniform #.

How about a batting avg. by letter quiz? Seeing as there are already home runs and wins quizzes

I second Eagle3's request for a batting average version--or home runs or hits or RBI or something. For some reason, I always blank on pitchers, and I have no idea why. I sit down for a pitcher-related quiz and space out so badly that I can't remember the name "Roger Clemens" or "Greg Maddux." I can picture them and tell you what teams they played for, etc., but their names just escape me in those moments. That doesn't happen with the hitters. It's all very mysterious.

Isringhausen... I guessed him but spelled his name wrong. Quickly convinced myself that there was no way a closer would hold the prestigious title of "The Most Wins of a Pitcher Whose Last Name Starts with an 'I'"

@Blaise - Izzy was a starting pitcher for the New York Mets for a season or two... That's where he got the majority of those wins.

Another boring American sports quiz! Couldn't this kind of thing be done for world sports like football, tennis, or golf first, and then have it done for the inferior sports played mostly by one country, afterwards?

A little addition to my batting avg. comment: If the great Sporcle Admins do create that quiz please for the sake of our memories do not include players before the year 1900.

Oh yes, batting avg.! - let's prolong the tediousness even more by having an ever so slightly different version of the quiz, while forgetting there are far more valid quizzes on other sports to be done.

@bobc: Quinn was kind of the Jamie Moyer of his day. A junkballer who pitched at an advanced age and contributed to some championship teams. Coincidentally in Philadelphia. George Uhle was a strong pitcher in the 1920s, twice led the league in wins. I think the 19th century pitchers are reasonable. These are not obscure names, they are Hall of Famers.

Uhle is also one of the pitchers sometimes credited with inventing the slider. ... Baseball was well-established prior to 1900; your ignorance is no reason to exclude players from that time.

Kazuhisa Ishii had 39 wins, and Hideki Irabu had 34 wins. the only reason Irsringhausen is the leader is his longevity: 14 seasons compared to 4 and 6 respectively.

only thing i think this quiz needs is some kind of date to give a general idea what era each pitcher is from. its a hard enough quiz to begin with.

Great quiz. Tried Drysdale at least 6 times! As an aside, Joe Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak is always referred to as the one record that won't ever be broken. I'm thinking that nobody else will get 400 wins, let alone break Cy Young's 511.

Is it Sporcle accepted practice to only update active player stats at the end of a season? Izzy just got a win for the Mets a few weeks ago so he is at 46 now for his career but not a big deal.
