| The reason there are so many 19th century players (Hamilton, Van Haltren, Latham, Hoy) is that before 1897, scorers could award a "stolen base" for situations that are not considered stolen bases in the modern sense. For example, a runner could be awarded a stolen base if he went from first to third on a hit-and-run base hit ... in modern baseball the runner is not awarded a stolen base for that. |
