The fact that the Cleveland Indians retired a number for "The Fans" is quite lame.

I'd just like to thank Sporcle for giving me four points for the name in the icon and two more for `jr'. Beyond that, my strategy of guessing common surnames and surnames of presidents was reasonably successful, though it didn't get me Grover Cleveland Alexander.

@Booger: Also, I'm not quite sure what they're trying to say by giving 455 as the number of The Fans — is that all they had?

@davidr: 455 is retired for the Indians fans in honor of their record 455 games sold out streak from the nineties.

@davidr: The Cleveland Indians had a 455 game long streak of selling out games. With 81 games a season, that's not an easy thing to do. It was the record at the time, but has since been passed I believe. Still, "retiring" the number 455 is quite lame in my book (which is, admittedly, just a pamphlet).

I used to think that Kyrgyzstan was the toughest Sporcle answer to spell but I now realize it's Yastrzemski

That was a lot of fun. I missed a few too many that I had no business missing (Koufax? Ott? Bench? Musial, who I forget in every single quiz?), but I'm happy I finally had a reason to type in "Hrbek". And @melissa, I think "Krzyzewski" is worse. At least Kyrgyzstan and Yastrzemski are kinda pronounced how they're spelled.

Man, some franchises will retire numbers for some awfully mediocre players just because they were mediocre for a long time. (Phil Rizzuto? Kent Hrbek? Jose Cruz?) It's hilarious that the Astros have retired nine numbers.

Yeah, but for Krzyzewski, Sporcle thankfully takes Coach K. Although Douche-bag should also be acceptable.

@booger: When the Indians streak ended at 455, no other team was even close. The Rockies were second with 203 straight. Boston broke the record last September (i think). Considering Boston's market is more than double the size of Cleveland's - and the fact that Fenway is roughly the same size as a shoebox - I think that Cleveland's streak is pretty impressive.

@catch84 Numbers weren't used on uniforms until around 1930 a good 20 years after Young retired.

I think teams retire numbers sometimes because players are so well-loved by the fans, or they did something remarkable beyond playing baseball. I think it's safe to say that all major league baseball players are better than average - that's why they are "professional" athletes. Jose Cruz was very well respected by Astros fans - I think he deserved to have his number retired.

Also, one of Young's main teams, the Cleveland Spiders, has been defunct for over a century. The Red Sox could honor him in some way, I suppose. Does anyone know how guys like Mathewson and McGraw, who also didn't have numbers, make this quiz? What have the Giants done to signify their non-existent numbers are "retired"?

i think there should be more time. i was at 111 when time ran out, and i really hadn't run out of answers yet. i love the quiz, though, because it shows how each team values its history differently. for example, the mariners, rockies, d-backs and blue jays have no retired numbers, whereas the rays and marlins already have retired a number each.

@booger: Sorry, i grew up in Cleveland and was actually at the game where they retired the number, so i have a bit of a soft spot for it. My point was that when it happened the record seemed unreachable (with second place being almost two full seasons behind)- and i though it was a nice gesture by the organization. No big deal - to each his own.

I appreciate the inclusion of Hornsby's STL alongside the rest of the numbers in this quiz. He was only a bonus in the STL retired numbers quiz (because he had no #), but his name belongs right up there with the rest. Thanks Ben!

I dont have a problem with the Indians paying tribute the fans, but Cy Young not having a number retired is crazy. I also think Pete Rose deserves to have his number retired. I bet that wont happen. Pun intended.

Teams aren't really consistent about retiring guys who never had a uniform number. Some of them do it (like the Giants), but some don't. I'm an Indians fan, and the team used to be NAMED for Nap Lajoie he was so popular/important, yet his name isn't retired.

Also, even as a Tribe fan I think '455' is a bit cheesy, especially since the Indians aren't lacking in great players in their history, but I know how important the sellout streak was to the city. Also, I can't wait for the day when Vizquel's #13 is retired.

@Melissa: My method for getting Yastrzemski is to spell it like it sounds (Yastremski) and then start putting that "z" in random places until it clicks. He shows up on a billion Sporcle quizzes, and this strategy has never failed me.

The Astros having that many retired numbers with zero players in the Hall of Fame is ridiculous...at least the two most recent (Bagwell and Biggio) will be inducted. who the hell is Jim Umbricht??

I love how the Astros have 9 retired numbers, despite existing for less than 50 years and winning the World Series exactly zero times.
