Why doesn't number 1 have an asterisk next to it also?

Basically just "Name the 500HR/3000 hit club member", but any quiz about baseball's a great quiz.

Yeah, there's only the one "t" in Mathews. And was it just me, or did it take "Fox" for Foxx?

I was surprised not to see any of the runners of the 98 home run race on here. It seemed like pitchers intentionally walked McGwire, Sosa, and Griffey every time they realistically could.

Yeah, Bonds needs as asterisk, as usage of performance-enhancing drugs greatly enhanced his ability to stand upright and watch a baseball go past him...

JohnF- I know the point you are trying to make but his steroid use led to his great power and hittling which led to pitchers pitching around him.

It's a shame more casual baseball fans don't know who the 18th ranked guy is, one of the best to ever play the game but has been obscured by time.

@Long Don Diego I agree with you that he did get pitched around a bit. Bonds still had a pretty good eye though. Steroids can only make you hit the ball harder, not put the ball on the bat. He probably wouldn't have been as high, but still on the list w/o roids.

Long Don: Most people think Barry started juicing around 1999. You want to know his walk numbers from 1989 to 1998? 93, 93, 107, 127, 126, 74 (strike shortened season), 120, 151, 145, 130. Long before he ever even thought about juicing, Bonds had one of the greatest batting eyes in baseball history and, seeing as he had won three MVPs, was robbed of a 4th and routinely hit 35-45 homers a year, pitchers already feared him quite a bit.

It's not so much a "great eye" as it is 1) being pitched around and 2) getting respect from the umps

Bonds got pitched around A LOT, not just a bit. I recall a team walking him with the bases loaded! Without the fear of Bonds launching one, which was obviously steroid enhanced, a good percentage of those walks don't happen. He did have a very good eye though and would have been somewhere on this list, just not at the top. In my mind, Rickey's still got this record just as much as Hammerin' Hank still has the HR record.

I sincerely doubt that Barry Bonds is the only one on the list who took performance enhancing drugs - my understanding is that they've been a part of baseball for a long time in one form or another. He's just everyone's favorite whipping boy.

I'm assuming an asterisk means that the player is still active based on other quizzes, but nowhere does it say that this is actually the case.

Should not have accepted "Fox" for Foxx. Did it really accept "Yaz"? If so, it shouldn't have.

@Guinevere: Being a douchebag helps. Remember how much everybody loved Mark McGwire in 1998? We even named a freaking highway after him in St. Louis.

Wouldn't you not want to walk the all time leader in stolen bases? Really surprised that he's number two.

because he also had a great batting eye and played for freaking ever (always helps). And bonds got pitched around a lot BEFORE any steroid contreversy, the bases loaded intentional pass was before 2000, they were ALWAYS afraid of him, before steroids or after

JohnJF: I recall McGwire getting pretty testy with reporters during the homerun race. People may have loved him, but he wasn't Mr. NiceGuy. I won't dispute that Barry is probably the bigger ass, but I think there are also other reasons McGwire was embraced. It wasn't his personality.

kevincrumbs, drawing walks is a batting skill, not just a failure (or concession) by the pitcher.

@Wes, why shouldn't it accept "Yaz"? The concept of these quizzes is to see if you know the answer to the question, in this case who leads baseball in career walks. It shouldn't have to be a spelling competition. If I'm on Jeopardy and Carl Yazstremski is the answer to the question (question to the answer?) I don't get marked off for not spelling his name right.

Pleasantly surprised this got published so quickly! I think the admins need to clarify that this is batters, not pitchers, and that asterisk means active
