The incumbent and Republican candidate in 1912 was William Howard Taft, not Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt ran as a 3rd party candidate as the "Bull Moose" party nominee. Even though Taft finished third in that race, as one of the two major party nominees, he should also be listed as a losing Presidential Candidate in 1912.

Re: "Booger" If you read the description, it defines the "loser" as the second place finisher. Taft could have been included, but then why not Perot, Henry Wallace, George Wallace, etc.?

Because Taft was the Republican (major party) nominee. Moreover, he received a greater percentage of the popular vote than any other third place finisher over the past 108 years. In fact, his percentage was not far from Roosevelt's.

Plus, let's not forget HE WAS THE INCUMBENT. If that's not a "losing Presidential ticket," I'm not sure what is.

taft lost the race, but perot "lost" in 92, wallace "lost", et cetera. the quiz is defined as the lits of second place finishers, which is by electoral votes

I have to wonder why Dewey isn't most guessed, though. Maybe behind Bush, Dole, Gore, and Kerry because everyone still remembers them, but when I hear losing president I think of the Dewey defeats Truman newspaper headline.

1. Why do so many people miss McCain? 2. If LOSER is defined by "second place finisher" or who got the second most amount of votes, then shouldn't George W Bush be on there for 2000? yeah?? nice

Bush did NOT lose in 2000. Yeah, I know he lost the Popular vote but he won the Electoral vote which is how we do things, so he is not defined as a loser in this particular case.

Very good quiz. I knew going into it I could get all the ones from 1952 on, and had a few brain drizzles to get others too. Ashamed to miss 2 quite prominent ones though (1936 and 1940).

donruss: I believe ElDavo was referring to George H. W. Bush who lost in '92 to Bill Clinton, not George W. Bush.

masterdebater: I don't think this quiz's stats are accurate regarding McCain. If you look at the dates of some of the comments, they come from before the election. I think Sporcle added McCain after the election and that is distorting the totals because, before the election, it's effectively as if all the people who did the quiz got McCain as a wrong answer.

It's a shame that only 12% got Willkie. Many historians regard him as the losing candidate most likely to have been a great president if he had been elected. 1940 was one of those rare years when both parties put up a worthy candidate.

GWB lost popular and electoral vote. The vote was stolen and the country didn't riot because everyone is depoliticized from 50 years of TV and mass advertising. But yes, the GOP stole the election. In Florida. They probably stole '04 in Ohio, too. But what do you care? You get to sit home all day, or at your mind-numbing job, and play these games. You're pacified.

I only got Dewey because of the infamous wrong newspaper headline that called him as the winner (in '48 I think).

@Paul So why Obama was elected this time? By accident? Pity? Or GOP lost the way how to steal?

@Victor Martins: Because Obama won by such a crushing majority that was too much to overcome without it becoming obvious that they stole. And technically, while we can't prove Bush lost, the votes thrown out in Florida and Ohio exceeded the amount that Bush won by by a significant amount, and the great majority of those who had their ballots thrown out were registered Democrats who said they voted for Kerry.

Hughes is very well known in my country (Dominican Republic) for being the force behind the end of United States occupation in 1924 when he was secretary of state. We even have streets named after him.

this quiz was made before the 2008 elections, thats why mccain has a lower percentage than you might think. everyone knows he lost, just that his answer wasnt acceptable until november of 08.

Terry, George W Bush (the most recent president of the family,) never lost an election, however controversial it may be.
