	mom/mum is maman not mere. Mere is the more formal "mother", likewise pere is "father" and papa is "dad". BTW: La Femme is the same for both wife and woman

	Pretty easy for a French guy. It always makes me laugh when you don't know when to write "le" or "la" :) dakaraja : "femme" can mean women in general, but also wife. I confirm that "mère" means "mother" and not really "mom".

	I'm sure the Germans laugh at our inability to know when to write der, die or das (or any of the other myriad forms of the) as well!

	I had always heard that Spanish was the easiest language to learn, because there aren't many if any irregular spellings. I'm happy with the three that I got, considering I took Spanish in school, and my school was so small that was the only extra language we had!

	Sooo...I don't know any French, but I wanted to applaud Sporcle for the new format. Thematic language quizzes like this are really useful, even beyond the trivia usually found on the site. (Don't get me wrong, as the captain of my high school quiz bowl team, I love trivia as much as anyone.)

	My students who are speakers of other languages and are learning English would NOT agree that any form of English is easier. Have you ever looked in a dictionary to see how many different definitions there are for the word play? or ball? Or that there are many instances of words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and pronunciations? English is actually one of the harder languages to learn.

	@ Sparky and all... I mistakenly thought American English so informal that it's easier to learn. Plus so many multi-lingual people speak English along w/Spanish or French or Arabic or German, or Mandarin, etc. How many languages does everyone here speak?

	'How many languages does everyone here speak?' German , Japanese , Irish (Gaelic) , English (Hibernian version )- used to have better French (but I got 18 /18 ;) some Zulu , Setswana and Sindebele -can get by in Latin but there's nobody around to speak it to ;) And I recall learning the cyrillic alphabet for a visit to Russia when it was the USSR . The best linguists imo are in Holland , Belgium , Sweden, Switzerland and in parts of Africa . Japanese are the worst with English and all english speaking countries a close second .

	@ springmom , 'English is actually one of the harder languages to learn.' Not at all . I found it very easy;) While it's true that there are more words for the same thing in English than in say French or German and that Spanish is more phonetic you need only 600 words to have a command of basic english whereas you need 2000 or more for basic French or German . In German there are 36 versions of the definite article depending on the case and noun gender and as Mark Twain said when a German speaks you have to wait till he/she gets to the end of the sentence to understand the real meaning (the verb ) the action word goes to the end . In Irish the verb (action word ) is the first word ;) If the Normans under William the Bastard /Tanner /conqueror had not defeated Harold in 1066 -the english language today would not look or sound anything like it does . It would be a kind of cross between Dutch Friesian and Faroese i.e another disease of the throat ;)

	Is there any reason why 'grand' in 'la grand-mere' is masculine, and 'petite' in 'la petite-fille' is feminine?

	@Wagonmaster : sometimes in old french the "e" is missing for the adjective "grand" For example, many streets are called "Grand rue", even if "rue" is feminine. I can't remember if there are some other adjective with the same characteristics

	16/18, the fact that I couldn't think of "tante" ridiculous... And English is easier to learn than most (European)languages. Generally less cases to be considered, and the nouns haven't all got a sex that needs to, in many cases, be memorized. As for native English speakers being bad with foreign(although seemingly many haven't even mastered their own :p) languages, I can understand how certain concepts would be difficult to grasp. The idea of adding something to the end of a word because of what is happening in a sentence must be baffling when it's something you're not used to. Best linguists? In my experience the Dutch are very good with languages. You'll find that the vast majority of people in the Netherlands speak English and German... a lot of people speak French as well. I think that the fact that it's a relatively small country as well as it's geographical location have a big impact on this. Also, I've always thought the fact that they don't dub foreign(we're talking mainly about english of course) tv shows(as the french/germans/spanish for instance do), everything is subtitled so people are forced to watch things in English.
