| But Full Metal jacket ISN'T any good. It's a bad movie. And Eyes Wide Shut has value but it's not 12 years worth of movie. Kubrick's best films were all made after a 2 or 3 year break from the last one. He wasted time and lost the fire. This is not really up for debate. And the choice isn't between 7 excellent movies and 36 Michael Bay movies - for one, Michael Bay makes movies about as often as Kubrick did when he was at his best. For two, Kubrick would not have compromised his vision or made inferior films if he had not begun taking entire decades off, and had instead continued working steadily. On the contrary, for an artist, working steadily is likely to keep you at or near your best. The two films after the longest layoffs are his two worst mature films. |
