Waiting for Godot really shouldn't count as an Irish work. The author lived his entire adult life in France and was influenced almost exclusively by French writers.

Ugghhh... I remember in my high school British English class we were going to do one more piece of literature before the end of the year. My teacher did not know what to do so I was trying to get her to do some Sci-Fi (Sci-Fi is ignored in school). I would bring in examples and books to show her. Well, in the end she just ignored all of it and chose that piece of crap Pygmalion. Reading a play sucks- its supposed to be watched. Anyway, I ended up ripping up the book and not reading it.

@smacaskill: I think he was absolutely an Irish author, even though his work could reasonably be classed under French literature.

@davidr: If you want to count him as Irish, then you can't count the author of Gulliver's Travels for the same reason - he was born in England and moved to Ireland. I would classify Waiting for Godot as French Literature (especially since it was written in French.) My point is this quiz isn't consistent in what qualifies as Irish Lit.

@smacaskill: Jonathan Swift was born at No. 7, Hoey's Court, Dublin.

@smacaskill: I'm sorry but I see no inconsistency. Many of these authors spent substantial portions of their life outside Ireland but every single one of them was born in there — either in the north or the republic — and had strong associations with the island. FYI,
Ulysses
,
Pygmalion
,
Narnia
,
Dracula
and
Earnest
were all written outside Ireland.

@GeordieGuitarist: She was born in Ireland but her parents moved to England while she was a young child and she lived her whole life there. I don't think she's usually thought of as Irish.

I always remember Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal, but can never remember he wrote Gulliver's Travels. I guess that book needed more baby eating.

@GeordieGuitarist: even if your mother only popped over to Dublin for a weekend (having lived in, say, Newcastle her entire life) and you chose that moment to be born - but then you spent the rest of your life living and working back in England?

late to comment, but I enjoyed this quiz. Three-quarters Irish and I got 13; missed Roddy Doyle, unfortuntely. A woman or two, say Maria Edgeworth or Edna O'Brien, would have been nice.

@ Catherine_F: In the US, anyone born in the US is a US citizen. (This sometimes causes problems regarding illegal immigrants, who come across the border to give birth.) I don't know if you would identify as being American though.
