Again, not a science quiz. Politics, maybe. Environmental policy, fine. Science? No.

On the website there are countries that have the same EPI, such as Sweden & Norway, and UK, Germany & Slovenia. So shouldn't they be sharing ranks? Just a thought...

@Mitchell: Costa Rica is one of the most liberal countries on earth. It has no standing army, universal education and health care, and is on track to be "carbon neutral" in 4 years.

@Edward: Me, too, since the rest of Scandinavia ranks so well. I hope geography wonks will forgive me if Denmark is not normally included in Scandinavia, but their proximity groups them in my mind. In fact, once I saw the top part of the list, I started working on the Baltic states, thinking there must be something about northerm climes that leads to green thinking. Mixed success there.

Redskins Rule - England should never be accepted as an answer for UK, in the same way you wouldn't accept 'Wyoming' as an answer for the USA. ;-)

Latvia and Slovenia were my only misses and thoroughly surprise me (Alps/Slovenia, ok ok). What does Latvia do that makes 25% of quiz takers guess them? Does Denmark lose out because of something dirty going on in Greenland?

@Bat122333: Iceland is in a lucky geological location in which is accessible to geothermal heat underground. The geothermal heat is used for energy. I am actually quit surprised that they are not #1 on the list.

What in the world is the Yale University Environmental Performance Index (EPI)? Almost all of the countries on the list are advanced OECD members, and only three are outside Europe (NZ, Costa Rica & Colombia) so perhaps it measures how much you've tamed or mitigated your industry. Like Freedom House's "unfree" countries list, you have to guess at the assumptions or tests behind the list, so I was safe guessing a lot of European countries (+NZ) and got 13/15 (my Latin American stabs in the dark like Uruguay, Jamaica and Cuba just happened to be wrong, but I'm not sure what Colombia's done to improve their performance.)

It seems ironic that Ireland, being the Emerald Isle, doesn't make it onto a list of the greenest countries.
