has anyone noticed that the "give up?" button always appears at :37 past the first minute? Is that a Clerks reference? Or is it a Michael Jordan reference (23 in?) Or will sporcle just play coy

wow, notice how most of them had their careers killed by it? apart from the beatles and CSN, i can't say there's many bands on here that I care about.

I only got 2 and one was by accident. Shows how much I keep up with the grammys

I typed about 50 different artists with no luck before clicking the "give up" button.

That was tough. I got The Beatles and Evanescence and I only got Evanescence because they beat Fountains of Wayne in 2004 despite Fountains of Wayne's first album coming out in 1996. I wouldn't mind seeing other quizzes like this, possibly best artist, best song, etc...

1990's nomination is a testament to how flawed this list is. Good quiz though...

Great quiz, though I did pretty badly with 14. I did remember Bob Newhart, though.

I don't think you can hold the Grammy's responsible for Milli Vanilli - when they were found out, this and other awards were taken away from them.

I love how some of the best new artist nominees were nominated many years after their first albums came out. It shows you how out of touch the Grammy awards are anyway. Furthermore, the last time I watched part of the show, anyone who performed at the Grammys won an award in the very next category. It happened every time.

I was commenting more on how awful they were rather than that they lip-synched awful music. But it makes me wonder if the prize end up going to the runner up after they were foung out? Guess not, since the list is the way that it is.

C'mon now, Grammys have rarely ever had anything to do with musical talent any way. Are artists on labels not associated with the RIAA even eligible? Man, though after the mid 70's this list becomes, in the words of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, "a who's who of who cares."

@DEEJ: yes, I've noticed it's always at 23 seconds in. I assume it's Sporcle just being playful with the belief that some people have that 23 is a mystical number - well I can't think of any other reason!

Does anyone know why there was no best new artist grammy in 1967?

Haha-i got MV from the VH1 BTM about them. I remember Pilatus saying that noone would've noticed if they didn't win a Grammy-and they won the GD grammy! RIP Rob.

It's shocking to see how MOR this list is from the late 60s through the 70s. An era that gave us Hendrix, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Springsteen, Punk (US & UK).........

What about the B Sharps. They beat out Dexie's Midnight Runners for their only grammy win!

@Statto: If you take, for example, Pink Floyd, they released several albums before being popular in the USA, so, while they were awesome, they might not have qualified for a Grammy for "Best New Artist". Because, you know, quality is measured by the number of sales.

@JulieD - well put! Starland Vocal Band sang "Afternoon Delight" a saucy song that sounds really staid.

That's a pretty shoddy list overall - one hit wonders, novelty acts, and (other than The Beatles and CS &N) a complete lack of any true legends. It seems the Grammys have never been about music - just about the flavour of the month.

@TheImpalerTMX: I disagree. While I don't personally like most of the artists, you have to admit that Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, LeAnn Rimes, Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5, and Carrie Underwood have all had pretty successful careers. Although the vast majority of people on this list including before the mid-70s are garbage.

I can honestly say that with rare exceptions (Beatles, Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill), we are better off without most of this list.

I think looking at this list of winners tells you exactly how useless this award is. A musically significant artist hasn't won this award since Tracy Chapman in 1989, 20 years ago.

you have to take into mind that not all of these artists are the types of artists who's careers are based off of chart-topping singles, but instead sell a lot of albums. Norah jones is one of the bestselling singers of this decade-she sold 16 million units in the united states and her first album is among the 100 bestselling in the world

@ Chumley- I thought they won for Outstanding Soul, Spoken Word, or Barbershop Album. What Dexy's Midnight Runners was doing in that category is anyone's guess.

You spelled Debbie Boone's name wrong. I should go shoot my face off for knowing that
