help me out here, englishmen: why isn't roy keane on this list? i am pretty sure his career had enough pre-1998 years to qualify, right? was this because of his temper?

i got 5 by putting in Charlton and then trying some common names. Would've gotten more if I had kept going, and if I had remembered Stan Matthew's last name (remembered something about "Our man Stan"

@pat: The list is spread evenly through the hundred-year history of the League. Keane first played in England in 1990 so I guess the people who made the list just decided he wasn't in the top ten for 1988-98.

I know the source at the BBC spells it Hughie Gallagher but its Hughie Gallacher everywhere else I've ever seen it. Couldn't believe Peter Beardsley didn't make the list.

Malcolm Macdonald is spelt incorrectly in the list - it should be with the a and it strictly doesn't have the capital D.

Fantastic quiz. Should have noticed it said 1998 though, wasted a lot of time typing in more recent players.

Well, this Yank got 42. Surprised Mark Hughes, le Tissier, and Andy Gray weren't on the list. I wonder who from the past 10 years would make a revised list. Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard, Scholes, Carragher, Henry?

I agree with Paul - he was often known as Supermac not Supermc! Would have got 58 with that & 59 if I'd realised Mortensen was spelt the Scandinavian way. Still missed Hurst, Greaves, Lofthouse & Charles (considered possibly the greatest all-round player Britain's ever produced). Notable absentees include Keane, Brooking, Pearce and Brian Clough (I admit his amazing scoring record was mainly outside the top division but Camsell & Paine are largely on her for non top-flight achievement).

It's amazing that Sir Roger Hunt wouldn't make this list. Only Ian Rush scored more goals at Liverpool than Hunt did.

For me Beardsley has a much better claim than Andy Cole. Beardsley in his prime was just about world-class & Lineker's strike-rate alongside him for England was much better than when he wasn't there. Cole scored a lot of goals but I think many of those were the second, third and fourth goals for Newcastle or Man U in games his team were winning easily he was never a great one for the late winner or equaliser when the team is struggling. I would put Ian Wright's claims above Cole.

i thought sheringham might get a go or cole but i suppose that was more like the treble in 1999 than the preceding years. Thought klinsmann might get a mention and definitely beardsley

I doubt there will be any additions to that list - as few of the big names will have played in the Football League, and for those that have it will usually be at the start or end of their careers. Beckham played a few games for Preston, but he wouldn't qualify for this list. Scholes and Keane shouldn't qualify either. I'm surprised Shearer's on the list actually, as the peak of his career was in the Premier League.

Come to think of it, Schmeichel and Giggs have dubious claims to FOOTBALL LEAGUE greatness, as their success was in the Premiership era. Cantona did at least win the old Football League championship (with Leeds).

@Tokyo S.: The list of Legends was chosen by the Football League but anyone who had played in the Football League or the Premiership was eligible. Technically, they're `legends chosen by the Football League' rather than necessarily `legends from the Football League'.

@Tokyo S.: And the reason that nobody else will be added to the list has nothing to do with all the best footballers being in the Premiership, now. It's because this was a one-off list to celebrate the Football League's centenary.

In that case the Football League have done a disservice to themselves. Schmeichel, Cantona, Shearer and Giggs are undoubted superstars of English football, but did little for the Football League itself. I suspect they were only picked because they were the biggest names in 1998 - not amongst the best 100 players in League history. No criticism of the quiz, btw - just a comment on the integrity of the list.

@Tokyo S.: I don't think they've done themselves a disservice. Since the creation of the Premier League in 1992, the Football League will never again have a world-class player at his peak. So they had two choices. They could either include players from the Premier League and celebrate English football as a whole, or they could say, ``Well, it's our centenary but we've not had any decent players for five years so I guess we'll have to pick the hundred legends from the first 95 years only. And, hey, the 100 Legends from the 200th anniversary will be the same list.''
