	@PresidentJSC: To a reasonable approximation, nobody outside the UK has heard of him. Of course, nobody outside the USA has heard of a few of the existing answers but I think it's better to aim for things that everyone could get rather than sharing out the `You have to live in country X' answers fairly.

	I would have liked to have seen a Frederica or Fredericka but perhaps there are no famous female Freds? I can't think of any, but names aren't my strong point. I too missed Hitchcock, even though I could picture him, argh. Fun quiz.

	Is the use of "Fred" for "Alfred" a US usage? I'm fairly sure that here in the UK "Alfreds" become "Alfs" or even "Alfies". As far as I know, I've never come across a Fred whose name was actually Alfred.

	For those of you who don't know, Fred Mertz was a character who appeared on nearly every episode of the classic "I Love Lucy." For being widely regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, this is a pretty big exclusion, so stop down-arrowing those who say so.

	Jereboam, no, to my knowledge most U.S. Freds are short for Frederick. I suppose there may be some Alfreds who go by Fred, but I think it's more likely they go by Al.
