Cote D'Ivoire without the accents needs to be accepted. It's accepted in every other quiz.

I'm a bit surprised at some of the exclusions, given the ridiculous political situations in a few other countries, but hey, the source says what the source says.

@atomicice: It's probably because of the civil war and the corrupt government.

How is Kosovo not topping this list? Maybe below Somalia and a few others, but otherwise it should be way up there. But not on the list at all?

@ryguy579: The source doesn't include Kosovo on its list. Either the Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy Magazine don't recognize it as a sovereign country, or (more likely) there simply isn't enough information. Interestingly, Serbia is #78...I'm not sure what exactly that means in relation to this question.

After poking around the website, while the indices claim to be for 2009, a lot of the site's information is a few years old. Serbia's description, copyrighted in 2006, doesn't acknowledge Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence.

I realize Georgia has had some -ahem- problems with its neighbor to the north, but is it really more prone to "failure" than, say, Armenia or Azerbaijan?

Also, it surprises me that so few people are getting Somalia and Yemen, one of which has fallen into complete disarray, the other of which is basically being held together solely by the brutality of its ruler.

@gopaladins: I have a sneaking suspicion that Niger owes its surprising fame to being the first five letters of "Nigeria". That's certainly how I got it...

I object to Somalia on the grounds that "failing" implies that it still has some semblance of non-failure.

Good time limit here, saves it from being another 'type all the countries you can' quiz. Anyway, I've now bought my Somalia/Sudan guidebook, if anyone wants a lend I hope to back in a couple of weeks but I wouldn't want to make any promises.

This was pretty much a layup to start on Africa. However I will say the absence of Swaziland is surprising, given I thought they were basically flat broke. Fiji not being on here was kind of interesting too.

Why do I feel Israel should be no. 1? Maybe its because two peoples have been there for 50 years fighting over a small area. Or maybe it's due to the simple hazardousity of the country, what with all the car bombings?

Surprising that Rwanda has apparently reached moderate levels of stability so soon after the nineties chaos (it's only 45th) although I'm not convinced it is based on much more than a current strong leader (which may not last)

Sucks to see nothing but nations with people of color on the list. I'm surprised no Latin American countries were on the list.
