	Gaelic is the Irish word for Irish. You might as well have Espanol for Spanish, and go that way for them all if you want to nitpick.

	@Zalagreensbury: haha that's a FML story right there And I just missed Maltese... I wasn't sure if it was part of the EU, so I hesitantly typed "Maltan" (question mark?), and it didn't show up so I tried every European country after that (yes, out of desperation I tried Russian which I know full well isn't in the EU, Belgian which I KNOW speaks French, Luxembourgian... Liechtensteinian, etc etc...oh yeah, and cyprusian.)

	Seems a bit of general ignorance fighting is in order in these comments. Irish is the accepted term for the native language of Ireland. Actual Irish speakers sometimes find the term "Gaelic" offensive as it doesn't distinguish between their language and Scottish Gaelic, which are not mutually intelligible. The Irish word for their language is "Gaelige." Cheesyjon, those are reasonable guesses but wrong since neither Norway nor Russia are part of the EU. Norway, Iceland and Switzerland are West Europe's notable absences from the European Union.

	I tried Serbian and Croatian, but not Slovenian. The Baltics never occured to me. Tried other Eastern European countries, but not bulgarian. Not sure how Greek didn't come to mind.

	This question about Gaelic seems to come up in every Sporcle language quiz. Brobert2 is correct. When English-speaking linguists use the word "gaelic", they are referring to the ancient language of Ireland and other places in which the Celts or Gaels settled. When speaking of the tongue of modern Ireland (besides English), the correct term is "Irish."

	How did I forget the second 'u' in portuguese?! I tried spelling it a hundred times until I thought Portugal quit the EU.

	Each new member is a new language, if speaking for EU. They wanted to limit the languages to the most spoken ones, but some members found it discriminatory and the idea was left. FYI, soon we can see Icelandic and Croatian on this test (because they'll soon be members)

	I only missed two - Dutch and Polish - but loads were from random guessing. I was trying anything that came into mind and I was trying Czech-Republician (which I knew had about 1/1,000,000 chance of being right!) when Czech came up :)

	Onno, the quiz creators didn't have a choice as of what to include. It's a list of the official languages of the European Union, as chosen by...the European Union. Not "languages spoken in countries that happen to be members of the European Union." Unless you meant that the EU would have been better if it included those languages.

	Kind of. I know these are the official languages as chosen by the European Union, but a quiz that asks for all official languages in the EU (or entire Europe) would have been more fun. Now it's just putting in the language named after the country for most countries.

	@tbh444: Minority EU languages would be an interesting quiz. Since the EU recognised Cornish as a minority language (despite its dubious status), it meant that Portugal is now the only EU country not to have any minority languages at all.
