Umm, okay? I already took the "Countries of Europe" quiz. That one was nicer looking because it had a map. This one was kind of plain.

And E.E.A. stands for European Economic Area. They adopt part of the Law of the European Union and have little influence on it, but they are somewhat related.

I got eight bonuses myself; I'll list them here since there's no other way to do it: Croatia (candidate); Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway (E.E.A.); Vatican, Andorra, Kosovo and Montenegro (unofficially use Euros).

@ekedolphin: I got a few more bonuses: Turkey (candidate) and a couple more who use Euros: Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican do it officially, Andorra and Montenegro unofficially. I assume Kosovo's in the unofficial column too. I missed Ireland because I kept trying to think of mainland Europe. But that was my only miss.

Actually, Vatican officially uses it. I got twelve bonuses; in addition to your list, Turkey and Macedonia are candidates, and Monaco and San Marino also officially use the Euro. That gives us 39 countries in the quiz; the eight European countries unassociated are Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, Moldova and one more that I can't think of.

France? I missed France. This is now easily my most embarassing quiz on Sporcle. France. The only other one I missed was Lithuania. France.

No, Switzerland is known for its neutrality, so it's basically not a member of anything, because it doesn't want to. Russia could become a member, but I don't think the EU will allow it because of some criteria Russia doesn't conform to. Things like human rights, attacking Georgia etc.

@Zac: The European Economic Area is a bunch of countries who are in a free-trade agreement with the E.U. They have to implement various parts of E.U. law, but they don't have to pay towards the running of the E.U. and it's development programmes. Nor do they receive money from the development programmes.

Since most countries in Europe are somehow related to the E.U., I put the related non-members in as bonuses. My thinking was that it's more educational to be told `No, but that country does use the Euro' or `No, but they're trying to join' than just `No.'

@Rigga: That's correct. Switzerland did actually begin negotiations to join the E.U. in 1992 but the Swiss people rejected membership in a referendum that December. Negotiations were suspended, but Switzerland's application was not formally repealed. Switzerland is also a member of the European Free Trade Association (the only member that's not in the E.E.A. or E.U.) and has bilateral trade agreements with the E.U.

@Mr Englishman. That's good, it means you got the main answers without stabbing around in the dark too much. I'd imagine most people only got the bonus answers after assuming they were correct real answers (I know that's the case for me!).

Ireland is split into North Ireland and South Ireland (which is just called Ireland). North Ireland is part of the UK, but Ireland is its own country.
