I'm pretty sure this is Top 25 Sports Movies picked by ESPN SINCE ESPN'S INCEPTION (1980). Title maker = Banned.

I really have to protest that many excellent sports movies aren't on here. Did ESPN use the BCS computers to choose this list?

Chess? A sport? Really? It's an excellent way to improve logic and other skills, but a sport?

I would tend to agree with everyone so far... the list isnt that great... it did come out in 2004 I believe.. I could be wrong on that... The list isnt that great... but if I came up with a list of my favorite sports movies and made a sporcle quiz... people would hate mine too :)

The fact that Rocky isn't on this list and that Jerry Maguire is considered a "sports movie" makes this list a freaking joke.

Foghorn is right. This list is the top 25 sports movies from the last 25 years. That means that anything made before 1979 doesn't count. Since Rocky was made in 1976, it wouldn't apply to this list.

haha I typed in stuff like 'miracle' and 'cool runnings,' I had no idea. The only one I got was 'remember the titans.'

Personally, I think there were better movies than some of the ones mentioned on here that came out after 1980, like "Without Limits" (I may be biased because I like Steve Prefontaine). I loved Caddyshack, but to me, it's not really a movie about a sport, it just happens to take place on a golf course.

Though I loved the Bobby Fischer film, how on earth can ESPN or anyone else rate it as a "sports" film good enough to outrank Rocky? This list has little credibility for me.

It is generally a poor list, which isn't sporcle's fault. For some reason, ESPN seem to have a real thing for Kevin Costner. And why did they only included films made since their inception? Raging Bull is the best film here by a mile.

I suppose all the complaints should be directed at ESPN since it is their list. (Although the rules probably should state the 25 year window of 1980-2004). My biggest problem is with 61*. This was never a theatrically released but a made for HBO project. Every other film list is theatrical films.

@chrispaz: ESPN has a thing with Kevin Costner because he makes sports movies. Usually good ones. In my opinion "For Love of the Game" was one his best but didn't make the list.

I think "Best Shot" should also be accepted for Hoosiers, it was called that in the UK. And where is Midnight Sting aka Diggstown on the list? I love that film. Damn you ESPN!

Here's a much better list also from ESPN. http://espn.go.com/page2/movies/s/top20/fulllist.html Omitting Breaking Away, Rocky and the Bad News Bears is a travesty.

Chumley, I agree with you on "For Love Of The Game". Excellent movie. Too bad it was limited to 1979-2004 as "Glory Road" and "We Are Marshall" are both excellent. Glory Road may be my second favourite sports movie after Remember The Titans.

I scored pretty badly because I didn't know about the time frame (and didn't notice all the movies on the list were 80s or newer). I tried tons of great sports movies outside the time frame -- Rocky, Slap Shot, Bad News Bears, Longest Yard, Pride of the Yankees -- and just got angrier and angrier at the game.

This is not a particularly good list, and I say that as a former employee of the company that made it. However, it does make for a good quiz, though it should be made clear that it's the top sports movies in ESPN's first 25 years, not ever. The first two I tried were "Rocky" and "Slap Shot" before realizing that none of them were before '79.

floorturtle your personal list of the 'greatest sports movies of all time' omits the vital predicate 'greatness' for any of them. blades of glory and happy gilmore don't belong in the same sentence as raging bull, never mind a list.

I think it's funny that I looked at this list and "Bend It Like Beckham" popped into my head, probably due to my watching of "Love Actually" this afternoon. It can't possibly be there. Oh wait. Hmm.

Searching for Bobby Fischer? That's insane. I'm sorry, chess is not a sport. And Rocky doesn't make the list? Or Bad News Bears? Heck, I'd rather see Mr. Baseball on the list than Bobby Fischer. ESPN, you are truly crazy.

Bend it like Beckham? Are you F-ing serious? And Jerry Maguire is a movie about sports like Pretty Woman is a movie about prostitutes. I thought Will Smith did a fantastic job of acting in ALI, but I thought the movie was terrible. Pool and Chess are fine games but not sports. If those count then Days of Thunder has to be on here. Rudy is sooo much better than most of the movies ahead of it on this list. Major League should be top 5. Best sports COMEDY of all time.

I was pretty shocked that probably the two greatest sports movies in the last 20 years, "When We Were Kings" and "Hoop Dreams", didn't make the cut. Guess they didn't like documentaries, either.
