Great quiz. So many songs I should have remembered but didn't. I hope we'll be seeing a quiz for the other "Piano Man" soon... wink, wink.

You should mention this is only songs written by John/Taupin, because otherwise you'd have to include things like "Whatever Gets You Through The Night"

And since some of these songs are covers, that's not even true. Not sure how you'd make the distinction between his Beatles cover and his appearing on a #1 hit by another artist.

Excellent quiz! Just to pick one little nit... the 1997 hit "Something about the Way You Look Tonight" should also include "Candle in the Wind 1997". That song was 11x Multi-Platinum. And man is 1977 through 1982 tough.

Dynamite - I think it does include it, but just doesn't show it. I typed in "Candle in the Wind 1997" and it gave me "Something About the Way You Look Tonight". Kinda confused me for a second. :)

Actually I think Candle In The Wind '97 didn't include the "19". It was a double A-side and the biggest selling single ever. Was expecting it to show up twice when I typed CANDLE IN THE WIND (for the Top Ten in 1988 as well). Kthejoker/Iurewhiuerw, "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" did hit #1 but he wasn't credited on it. And the quiz-maker did his homework because he included all the songs where he wasn't lead artist too! (Flames Of Paradise, That's What Friends Are For, Through The Storm, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me)

I've always seen "Candle in the Wind '97" written so, with the apostrophe. Think you could let it accept this as an answer? Since this was the only song I could name..

@BlueWingX Did Rick Wakeman have top 40 hits by himself? That's your "Piano Man" right?

"Something about the way you look tonight" hit the top 40 in it's own right and it should be shown that way. It was the first time I did this one. @ vernon - Elton wrote and recorded "Don't let the sun go down on me" BY HIMSELF first, THEN he did the duet with George Michael. It was a big hit BOTH times......

I was really surprised "Tiny Dancer" isn't on the list. I looked it up and saw it only made it to #41. I think it's one of his best known songs though.

@ Springmom - I know. But he wasn't lead artist the second time. George Michael was. One little nitpick though... the whole list is chronological and as such "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" should be in between "Kiss The Bride" and "Sad Songs" and "Empty Garden" and "Blue Eyes" should switch places.

@ debbiedoesnothing - I totally agree with you. I was so sure it was supposed to be there that I purposely typed in a few misspelled versions of it, just to be safe. Also, I really love your name!!

It's nearly impossible for me to believe that Tiny Dancer didn't make Top 40.

While Elton sang on "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night", he did not get label credit. This list seems to be based on Joel Whitburn's Top 40 Hits book. Also missing: "Bad Blood" by Neil Sedaka. Same situation, Elton shared vocals but did not get label credit because of label politics at the time. In Canada, "Pinball Wizard" (from the film "Tommy") made #1 as an LP cut, but didn't chart because it wasn't released as a single. I think I may do an Elton John top UK singles quiz.

OK, it didn't make the Top 40 in the US, but does anyone remember 'Act Of War' - a duet he did with Milli Jackson in the 80s?

mattrd08 & Desperado: I looked it up, "Tiny Dancer" peaked at 41. Missed it by THAT much! I got about half of these...the other half I never even heard of before. It's funny how many excellent songs Elton had that didn't make Top 40 & how many forgettable ones he had that did make it.

I still can't believe Tiny Dancer was so low. It's still played on the radio, quite often too. It was kinda cheap that Candle in the Wind didn't get accepted for 1997.
