I'm a music education major, and I can tell you that "SOL" and "SO" are both considered acceptable spellings for the fifth major scale degree. Most modern theory charts use "SO" in order to remain consistent with the other 16 syllables, which are all two letters long. (DO, DI, RE, RI, MI, FA, FI, SI, LA, LI, TI, TE, LE, SE, ME, RA). "Sol" would be out of place in that list.
Choral directors and voice teachers use "Sol" because it encourages a better "o" vowel.
In any case, the memory song which serves as the basis for this quiz uses "SO," since "SOL" does not rhyme with "DO," as the song calls for ("LA, a note to follow SO; TI, a drink with jam and bread; now bring--us---back---to--DO"). |
