I'm pretty happy with myself for getting 38. Most of the ones Imissed were islands.

I'm surprised I was able to get 48. I guess brushing up on my microstates and islands nations payed off.

its weird that i consider american cities to be crowded, but when compared to monaco, they seem roomy.

I knew India was populous but I always pictured it as a massive country so I never even considered typing it in. Pretty happy overall that I got 40 right. Great quiz though made you think outside the box trying to complete two different lists.

39/50! And wow, I can't believe I forgot about Singapore LOL. I basically tried all the pacific islands and european countries at first. But the first places that came to mind when I read the title were Hong Kong and Macau.

@metfan: Russia appears in the Sparsely Populated Countries quiz. The USA's pretty sparse, too -- the same area as China but only a quarter of the population. Full details at the source link.

@Pat: Looking at city limits, rather than Metro areas: New York, 10,482 people/km²; San Francisco, 6,324; Chicago, 4,816; Boston, 4815; Philadelphia, 4,201; Washington DC, 3,700; Los Angeles 3,168; Baltimore, 3,058. (Not an exhaustive list; just the cities I thought of.)

@Jimmy B.: Hong Kong and Macau would be up there at the top end both lists if they were independent nations.

I got 40/50 first attempt, was never going to get Marshall Island and Tuvalu but overall I was pretty pleased.

OK. I strenuously object. I LIVE in Trinidad & Tobago and it wouldn't accept it with the ampersand.

@Vernon G.: Strange — spaces and most punctuation marks are ignored so I'd thought that, by having "trinidad tobago" as an answer, "trinidad&tobago" would be allowed.

I think splitting it into two tables was a good idea as Sinagpore, the Vatican and Monaco have high densities simply due to the fact they are city states.

@Chris, Singapore is on both lists as it has more than 1 million inhabitants.

Excellent quiz - I went in guns blazing, with 'China' and so on, and got nowhere until I really thought about it. Ended up with 32/50, awesome idea breaking it into two lists!

This is one of the best quizzes of them all, hands down! I loved it. It really made me think, and I still missed 11. The two lists idea is great! I have learned so much just from doing these quizzes.

@ared: middle america is a term that refers to middle class americans (in the USA). i belive the term you are looking for is central america.

Yep, harder than I thought it would be. These countries aren't entirely random, it's sort of what you'd expect in terms of dense population, plus the small countries that have only one square mile of land.

I wanted to make "the world's most densely-populated countries" game, but this "2 in 1" is nice touch.

41/50 first time. The side by side tables gave the numbers a more complex meaning. Just like springmom said, I'm learning a lot from the quizzes.

@davidr: i found http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0855603.html but you'd probably still need a script to sort the cities by population ...

@ared: Thanks. Alas, that page doesn't quote its sources, which makes me rather reluctant to base a quiz on it. Never underestimate the wrath of somebody who *knows* that Spontala is the 23rd-smallest capital on the planet and finds that it's missing from the quiz! :-) (On a practical note, it would be rather tedious to extract the data from that page.)

it's not that i want to insist on using the list on the page above, but sources for the data are listed in the FAQ ( see http://www.infoplease.com/helpfaqs.html#content20 ). to sort the cities by population somebody would need the write a small script or program to get it done. if nobody else wants to do that i could probably do it.

I'm a bit concerned that that list still regards Koror as the capital of Palau rather than Melekeok and Rangoon as the capital of 'Myanmar' rather than Naypyidaw (although this one wouldn't feature in the quiz). Seems a bit out of date.

@sam: yeah, i think you're right. i checked a few random numbers with wikipedia (although this isn't a reliable source either) and there are some big differences there too. maybe someone else finds a better source and we can still get the quiz.

How come Taiwan has two different success ratings?
davidr
:

@Paul: Well spotted! It's probably because `Republic of China' is accepted for Taiwan in the first list but not the second (I'll get that fixed). I'm surprised so many people were using the longer name.
