@Ben: John Hancock is famous for having the largest signature on the Declaration; he signed first and significantly larger than the other signers.

I wonder to what extent a(n American) person's knowledge of the signers depends on where they grew up/have lived? I mean, I know I only got John Witherspoon because a ton of things were named after him in my former hometown.

John Hancocks signature is so big because he wanted it to stand out to the king. Also Charles Carrol added Of Carollton to his name because his name was a common name so he wanted to be sure the king knew exactly who he was

William Williams. The single greatest founding father (namewise). Forgetting Charles Thomson of Pennsylvania, who signed it as the secretary, attesting to the Declaration's signing.
