I'm very surprised that construction worker isn't on here. A little less surprised that hooker is missing, but I tried it anyway.

I guess coal mining has improved by leaps in bounds this past century. Perhaps that would bring a slow death years in the future as opposed to on-the-job.

I would have thought firemen would be on there, but i suppose in the US policing is MUCH more dangerous than firefighting, what with the gun issue.

Oh, yeah, I tried miner as well. I also tried animal tamer and lion tamer.

Is it wrong that I was so hoping zoo keeper was going to be there? I spelled about eight different ways because I really wanted it to be true.

According to the Forbes article, the jobs are ranked based on mortality rate. But what would the list look like if serious injuries and illnesses were also included?

Isn't President of the United States the most dangerous, since 8 of our previous 43 died while doing that job? That's a pretty high percentage.

i always thought those city bicycle couriers/messengers had a really high death rate? cant seem to locate a number on wikipedia though.

If they'd report all workers, not just the documented, surely meat/poultry processing would make the list, if casualties included Jaspers's suggestion.

How do armed forces miss out? I'm guessing quite a lot of them die especially since we're in a war.

I wonder if food delivery is included in drivers-salespeople. I seem to remember that being identified as the most dangerous job several years back. ... In NYC, construction worker would definitely be on the list, because the city pushes for more ugly glass buildings to be built faster and faster and no one stops developers who amass more and more code violations, while poor immigrant laborers keep falling to their deaths.

I think if you type bin men or rubbish/refuse collectors then that should be sufficient as no one is going to type 'Refuse and Recyclable Material Collectors'

@DoubleUnderscore: Refuse collectors spend a lot of time working at the business end of what is, basically, a mobile trash compactor so I guess a lot of them get run over or crushed.

@davidr: Surely you're joking. Getting crushed by the truck? I'm sure if that were true it would be in the news a lot more. I'm sure it's mostly falls and exposure to toxic materials.

U.S. president should be a bonus answer. I know it said 2008, but the death rate of U.S. presidents is over 18,000 deaths per 100,000 workers.

Soldiers aren't on here because there are so many of them, and for every 1 in a warzone, there are 10 somewhere fairly safe. I was surprised that firemen weren't on the list.

This stuff is so fascinating I looked it up: http://www.bls.gov/iif/oshcfoi1.htm#2007 (the quiz should probably be retitled: the data is from 2007, not 2008). Did you know that 36 people died on the job in 2007 due to animal attacks?

Poultry/Meat workers should be on here no doubt. We learned in school that was by far the most dangerous job you could ever have, people being dismembered, beheaded, and killed by their own equipment every day.

@Cuthbert Twilley: I'm not joking at all. Does it really seem that unlikely that a refuse collector would fall into the truck? Or get dragged into it after hooking a dumpster onto the back and getting his clothing caught or something.

@Vermin. If you rob an off licence I'd imagine it would be considered a badly botched job if you end up having to shoot someone.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't military personnel not work since the question is dangerous jobs IN AMERICA? I realize they're employed by the US, but considering the deaths occur overseas it might not count. What's shocking to me is that the oil rigger on American Idol is apparently a liar since he keeps claiming his job is the 3rd most dangerous in the US.

I'm a bit upset that it didn't take "linesman" for "Electrical Power Line Installers and Repairers". :-(
Otherwise, good quiz!
