i'm curious as to the overlap of people who did well on this quiz, and people who did well on the other quiz posted today (the Prefectures of Japan)

About time sporcle did a country music oriented quiz. That comment was lowbrow, matt.

Well I got 25 here, and 4 on the Japan one. So I don't see your point, wiseguy.

Got 53 - used to be pretty into country music but not as much in the last few years. My two big surprises: Olivia Newton John was country and Mary Chapin Carpenter is not that well recalled - she's one of my faves!

@WestWingerjd: I take it you haven't seen the movie Super Troopers. That movie is the only reason I remembered Charlie's name, as well as the winner for 1975.

This quiz seems pretty impossible unless you're a fan of country music and its history. 80% of the names on that list I've never heard of before

As a great fan of pre-1960s country music, it would have been nice if the CMA started these awards a little earlier so that they could get some recognition on Sporcle! Ah well, bring on the Country Music Hall of Fame quiz!

Great stuff sporcle! Country music has definitely been under appreciated on sporcle thus far. Such a shame that Country music, or at least CMT Entertainer of the Year has gone so far down the pan in recent years. Some absolute legends on that list: Jones, Cash, Wynette, Harris, Haggard, Parton, Nelson and Jennings. Bring on Country Music Hall of Fame inductees!

@matt: You're displaying the exact same ignorance that you are implying country music fans have. People choose to listen to country to hear honest, heartfelt and beautiful songs, not because it is the only music their 'simple' minds can stand. Perhaps if you were open minded enough to look past the cruel stereotypes that have always dogged country music, you might uncover something new today.

OK the fact that ONJ has an award and the JUDDS are nowhere is SAD!!! I can not believe that The Judds or Wynonna on her own hasn't won before?

Here's an oldie but a goodie. Q: What do you get when you play Country music backwards on your record player? A: You get your wife back, your horse back, your dog back, your truck back...

@ Jeremy: Well, the Judds were a duo, so they couldn't have won the female vocalist award (or male, obviously). And there's clearly a bit of male bias in the Entertainer of the Year award.
Freddie

@SentioVenia: Yes there is a bit of male bias, but to be honest this is true for every form of music. Country music was actually the very first genre of music to achieve male/female parity on its charts (in 1999), so its arguably the least sexist genre out there believe it or not!

@catherine: I personally love John Denver, but I just didn't associate him with country music - I always though of him as more folk-ish. I was surprised by the number of artists that weren't on the list that were favorites of mine - Jerry Reed, Donna Fargo, Dan Seals, Mickey Gilley, Conway Twitty. I'm with Freddie - let's do the Hall of Fame next!

Anyone want to explain to me how Hank Williams, Jr could be Entertainer of the Year in 1987 & 1988, yet Randy Travis was the Male Vocalist of the Year both those years. What is the difference in criteria between those two categories that would lead to that result? It happened on more than those two occasions and also crossed up with the Female Vocalist of the Year award as well.

@biohazard: It could easily be interpreted as a low bLow to country music fans. There's a negative stereotype that country music fans are unintelligent (probably due to the same association applied to Southerners). Thus, it could be interpreted that there's no way a country music fan could no anything about something like Prefectures of Japan. However, I believe matt. They are just too completely opposite topics. It should be noted that geography is probably most country musicians best subject (check out the game 'I've Been Everywhere' in the music section).

@Bretzky: I don't think there's a clear cut answer but from what I understand the Entertainer of the Year is usually awarded to the King (or queen) of record sales and tours, whilst the vocalists awards go more on merit. Hence, Chesney has won the entertainer of the year the last few years because he by far the most successful artist out there commerically, but his lack of a Vocalist win shows just what country purists really think of him (not much!). In my view, Male/Female vocalist is the column to look at. Heck, when George Jones is in this one, and the likes of Shania Twain, John Denver and Chesney are in the other its no contest really!
