Nice, first comment. On another topic, good quiz. Didn't think Papua New Guinea would be up there or Iran for that matter.

I can't believe I forgot Venezuela! I'm a little surprised at Papua New Guinea. But that's alright. I didn't do too poorly.

The US has 43 times more airports than India, and 29 times more than China. Kinda makes you think.

Really suprised to see so many south american countries. I guess I was thinking more about population than land area

Japan doesn't have at least 255 airports? Weird.

So I clicked on the link...turns out its airports AND airfields. I think that should be clarified in the directions. And they have the European Union listed as #3. Which is odd...

14,951 airports in the U.S... you think with that many airports, the lines at them wouldn't be so long.

wow. each state has an average of 300 airports. it is absurd. That being said, i live in a town of 6,000, and we have a very tiny airport. And the town of 8,000 15 miles north of us has one... hmm

I did the EXACT same thing as mungar (three entries above). You just know that at the South American Airport Meeting, Peru is getting laughed at 24/7.

Pretty mind blowing that Bolivia, Paraguay and Colombia could be in the top ten. They must be taking into consideration all the random landing strips that the drug cartels use in South America...

@Hope: it was left out because the EU is not a country. The source includes it because the EU consolidates many stats, but the individual countries are the only things that matter for the quiz. Also, I got Papua New Guinea only because i figured, "Hmm, Indonesia's here, maybe it is, too". Lucky guess.

ah, if its airports and airfields that makes a lot more sense. for every country. papua new guinea shouldnt have more airports than japan it seems (i did the same as mungar, hahaha :D), but they could certainly have more via airfields.. i live in a town of maybe 400 and there is an airfield here.

Number 21 really surprised me! I assume the island chains have a lot of airports so tourists can go island hopping.

A couple were quite surprising. For example, # 12..and even though Iran is bigger than Turkey in area, I would have thought the former would have more airports than Iran, since it's more developed..

I assume the South American countries have so many airfields because of the terrain. It's difficult and expensive to build roads through all those mountains and rain forest, and the ones that are there wind through all of that stuff. It's probably easier to hop into a small plane. Kind of similar to Alaska in that way.

This seems to be determined by wealth, size and difficulty of terrain. Except these don't really explain Guatemala, do they?

This really shows how spread out the population of the Americas is. It doesn't hurt that air travel started over here. In Europe it's a lot easier to take a train or something between countries but there's not quite the infrastructure in the western hemisphere to do that. On another note, how the hell did I forget to put Russia?

A lot of things to consider here - size isn't enough to be near the top (Australia, China, India etc) but then again neither is wealth (Japan, Spain etc). Like John says, probably has a lot to do with the alternative infrastructure - Japan ane Europe have very sophisticated rail networks, perhaps more so than the Americas.

I thought perhaps the reason for so many airports in the US and the rest of the Americas was drug trafficking. But that wouldn't explain Canada, would it?

Those stats seem a bit iffy. Papau New Guinea is very small and a third world country... how can they have 557 airports. They must be using the term 'airport' very loosely, perhaps runway, or even patch of grass where a light plane may land.

Papua New Guinea is all about resource development -- mining, oil, gas...and it has crazy rugged terrain. When "first world" companies come in to develop, it's way cheaper and easier for them to build an airport where they need to go than to try to navigate what are probably non-existent roads.

@Dummo: When I submitted this quiz, it had a note attached to it saying something like `Definition: Anything the CIA thinks looks like an airport or airfield from satellite photographs'. It didn't make it into the quiz, though.
