I believe credit for this quiz should go to Mark Vahrenwald.

But their football programs are too insignificant to care.

How could you ignore Cal/Stanford?: "The Big Game". UCLA/USC is also the Battle for the City.

Notre Lame/USC probably isn't on here because it's next to impossible to spell "Shillelagh" without having to look it up!

@astor, it mentions Army-Navy in the description on the main page. I think they didn't put it on the quiz because it doesn't really have a nickname, it's just "The Army-Navy Game"

What about CAL vs. STANFORD and "The Big Game" Not only is this the oldest football rivalry in the west, it is also the rivalry that gave college football "The Play"

Little Brown Jug - Minnesota-Michigan...first one I thought of but not there...

Plenty of room for expansion-maybe even ones where trophies are given out? The Old Brass Spittoon, The Beehive Boot, The Old Oaken Bucket, IlliBuck, the Cy-Hawk, Trophy-there's really too many to name right now.

The Zona-ASU game is also known as the Territorial Cup. And is West Virginia-Marshall realyl a rivalry? I looked it up, and they've played all of eight times since 1911, with WVU winning all eight matches.

You guys are idiots. Yes, I like Virginia, but no, I wasn't expecting the Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry to be here. It's all about the interesting names/HUGE games. Like, bigger than Minnesota-Wisconsin.

i'd guess the nice folks at sporcle were going for games that specifically have a name for the rivalry. the little brown jug, paul bunyans axe, the Jeweled Shillelagh, the oaken bucket, the beehive boot, etc aren't the names of the games, but rather the trophies that go to the winners. thus, they don't fit the category, but they would make a nice quiz on their own.

that was harder then I thought! yikes. they could really expand on this though...i mean ku/ksu is a pretty big rivalry and it has a name (though it's not considered as bad-blood as the border showdown), missouri and illinois, i can go on. still nice quiz!

No love for the Commonwealth Cup? I agree, WVU/MU isn't much of a rivalry on the field. Being a WVU fan, I can tell you the biggest part of the rivalry is lived between the fans, but it's really not much of a rivalry.

I attended USC and have been a fan of USC football all my life and have never once heard someone call the UCLA game "the battle for the victory bell". It's a great rivalry but there's not a common name for it.

I'm afraid I must disagree with you, ElDavo. The Minnesota-Wisconsin football rivalry has been going on for over 100 years. And sure the Gophers are down for the last half century or so, but they do have 6 national titles (yes in football- stop laughing!). The game for Paul Bunyan's Axe should be on this list, or at least a star in a new quiz per Mark's suggestion.

I find it really interesting that Baylor/A&M is listed on here. First off, I've never heard any of our games with Baylor referred to as the Battle of the Brazos. And second off, it's a fairly insignificant rivalry. Baylor doesn't like at A&M, but generally they suck at everything so it doesn't matter.

Boston College vs. Notre Dame is called the Holy War in addition to BYU vs. Utah. The BC/ND game makes more sense given they are the only 2 Catholic universities with FBS football teams

Interesting that "Coal Bowl" worked for "Friends of Coal Bowl", but "Victory Bell" doesn't work for "The Battle for the Victory Bell" Plus, I agree with Rick that nobody in LA calls USC-UCLA anything other than "The Crosstown Showdown (or Crosstown Rivalry)"
