A lot harder than I thought it would be
Jan 18th, 2009 at 05:18 GMT
Can't believe I got 18 and still missed Nicaragua. I knew there was a Central American country I was forgetting.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 05:26 GMT
This list is more random than most of the "top ____ producing countries"; I agree with poster #1 gotta think tropical.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 05:34 GMT
What an eclectic assortment of countries. I got Brazil immediately, as I'd hope anyone would, and then it was pure guesswork.

Dear creators of Sporcle, I must formally ask you to take your site down because I'm not getting any homework done. Sincerely, Talick

Dear creators of Sporcle: Please don't listen to Talick because if you take this site down I might have to start doing some work.

Dear creators of Sporcle, I have become lost in a paradox. If Sporcle consumes all time and does not allow anyone to work, how do you work on Sporcle?
Jan 18th, 2009 at 06:26 GMT
Got all but Cote d'Ivoire, Venezuela and Papua New Guinea. Damn, forgot that last south american country, and I underestimated Papua New Guinea's capabilities... >< for some reason I thought Madagascar or Ghana would be up there but I think Madagascar is good for something else like vanilla beans.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 09:15 GMT
This was another one I was going to write myself but couldn't quickly find data for. :-) My excuse for 15/20 is that I've not had any coffee yet, so missed a bunch of central American countries that I thought I'd already tried. I was really surprised at #2, though: I guessed it from its latitude but I've never seen coffee from that country on sale in the UK.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 09:17 GMT
@Jimmy B.: Madagascar is famous for its vanilla, yes.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 11:26 GMT
i was surprised at only four african countries and kenya not being one of them. also about surprised about number 2...
Jan 18th, 2009 at 11:48 GMT
@jack: Yes, I was a bit surprised about Kenya, too. Their 2007 production was 37,500 tonnes so they're probably in the top 25.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 12:54 GMT
yeh. its all those kenco adverts
Jan 18th, 2009 at 13:11 GMT
was also surprised about #2. also by the african countries - not that they're in here but which ones ... #12 is rather small, never knew about #5, etc.
but then again i am not much of a coffee-person :)
Jan 18th, 2009 at 13:14 GMT
Got them all but did used to work for a coffee connoisseur so had an advantage.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 13:27 GMT
I was surprised at Vietnam . Missed Guatemala, Madagascar and Cote d'Ivoire and (oh dear) Peru
Jan 18th, 2009 at 13:41 GMT
Missed Honduras as I misspelt it. Also missed Ivory Coast, Madagascar and Thailand. I like coffee so guessed it would be the Central American, African and South East Asian countries. I agree that it's surprising that Kenya isn't on the list.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 13:46 GMT
6,12,19 are the only ones i missed, but i only got the rest co i have drunk coffee from thopse countries before; conlcusion i drink to much coffee, but there appears to be room for more!
Jan 18th, 2009 at 14:01 GMT
What in the hell @ vietnam #2. That's insane. xD I got 16.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 14:12 GMT
I think most people are surprised by Vietnam being #2 because it doesn't produce what most would consider to be drinkable coffee. Almost all of Vietnam's production is of robusta bean coffee and not arabica bean coffee. As such, most Vietnamese production is what we call "jet fuel" in the States or is used to cheapen coffee that would otherside be made entirely from arabica beans. Arabica bean coffee is more expensive and tastes good; robusta bean coffee, not so much.

Alright, so I did okay, but not as well as I should have. Man, I love African coffee.

17 out of 20, but I just got a tour where the guide showed us the coffee producing region of the world on a map. The day before the tour I would have been good for 6. Thanks for another great quiz, Sporcle!

Love these ones. Can we have more like it? The only problem is it's too easy to guess countries but you sure learn something from them.
Jan 18th, 2009 at 21:19 GMT
Great quiz. So interesting! Very surprised at #2; I guessed it, but thought it would be much lower on the list! I missed Philippines & Cote D'Ivoire, did pretty well just guessing by climate (thanks for the mental map, Countries of the World quiz)!
Jan 18th, 2009 at 22:51 GMT
Fantastic quiz. I wonder how many people's first answer is Colombia?
Jan 19th, 2009 at 00:01 GMT
@ Sabo: Colombia was my first answer thanks to the old "Juan Valdez" coffee commercials. Major "up" points to debbiedoesnothing: ROFLMAO
Jan 19th, 2009 at 00:55 GMT
16/20 for me...i never would've thought Philippines would be up there being that my family is Filipino
Jan 19th, 2009 at 03:52 GMT
17/20. Not bad for someone who hates coffee.
Jan 19th, 2009 at 04:45 GMT
maybe allow new guinea for papua new guinea since that's allowed for the countries of the world game.
Jan 19th, 2009 at 05:15 GMT
got em all with 1:42 to spare!
Jan 19th, 2009 at 10:26 GMT
Missed Ivory Coast, Uganda and forgot Nicaragua. I just guessed all the Central and South American countries as well as the East Indies. Was shocked when I just randomly tried other tropical countries and Vietnam and Ethiopia appeared...
Jan 19th, 2009 at 20:52 GMT
@JulieD - well done! I got 16 & hate coffee too (I'm a Brit who likes tea). I didn't get any mainland African countries because I guessed the wrong ones.
Jan 20th, 2009 at 13:23 GMT
Vietnam was a real surprise--I got it just by sweeping through the tropical countries in my mind. Never would have guessed it for #2 in the world. The other funny thing is how many places are world renowned for their coffee but don't make the grade in terms of total production--Cuba, Jamaica (Blue Mountain), and United States (for Hawaiian Kona).
Jan 20th, 2009 at 20:57 GMT
Fresh from the mountains of Nicaragua.
Jan 22nd, 2009 at 11:59 GMT
According to Wiki Kenya is the 17th largest producer of coffee but doesn't appear on Sporcle. Hmm. Who is right?
Jan 23rd, 2009 at 13:51 GMT
@susee: I was surprised about Kenya not being on the list, too. I remember the male lead on the Britcom "As Time Goes By" lived for years in Kenya running a coffee plantation. Wonder what's up with that?
Jan 23rd, 2009 at 15:17 GMT
Sporcle is right here - Kenya is 25th, according to the UN.
