pretty sure nimbus is just a modifier, basically saying "rain version". Cumulonimbus: Rain-producing cumulus. Nimbostratus: Rain-producing stratus.

Nice quick quiz...but it would be nice to see this include a few of the lesser known types...like lenticular or mammatus...if nothing more as bonus answers. Then again, having majored in meteorology, I'm a bit biased I suppose.

nimbus, nimbostratus, cirronimbus, and cirro-stratus are all cloud types as well.

for afk, nimbus just means rain so it cannot be on its own. and there are no cirronimbus because it is frozen

I'm pretty sure I learned some of these attached the opposite way around ie cumulostratus..... not sure if this is a regional thing or just incorrect.

@ArcticFahx: You are right. Nimbus is a modifier indicating that the cloud is producing rain. Stratus clouds make the sky overcast. Nimbostratus clouds produce rain.
