@Rabbit: I was going to ask why "Mormon" wasn't allowed for LDS, but now I see . . . Also, I didn't know Episcopalians were Anglican. This is why I love Sporcle, I'm always learning new things!

@ dodge isn't the Emerging/ Emergent Church just the name for non-denominational churches with a liberal theology?

@Admin: Two other points. Should you accept Church of England for the one at 73 million? And while you are using a specific source, I believe there are over 300,000 members of the Salvation Army.

Is United Church of Christ lumped in with Stone-Campbell? Seeing as I was baptized UCC, I should probably know, but does anyone have clear and concrete knowledge on the subject?

@rockgolf - we can consider adding the Church of England, but it isn't really a denomination it is a church of the one listed, as for the salvation navy, we are sticking with the source, but you can lobby Adherents.com to add it, however then they would have to add the salvation navy, the salvation marines, and so on...[jokes]

After checking the source, I'm a bit disappointed that my attempts at "Christian Scientist(s)" were denied since I didn't type "Christian Science." But then against I forgot about the Baptists and the Methodists, so what do I know?

Mormonism isn't Christianity. I'm tired of people calling it christian. It isn't. It's an entirely different religion that claims to believe in the Bible. I'm no expert on the Mormon faith but I do know they have another holy book besides the Bible, therefore, it is not a Christian denomination.

@Dr Tom: They believe that Jesus was the Christ (i.e. divine Son Of God), so by definition are Christian. They have other beliefs that distinguish them, such as Jesus appearing in the New World. But that is only a matter of degree of difference when compared to tenets specific to other denominations.

The United Church of Canada alone had about 700,000 members in 1998. Perhaps Adherents.com has discovered a slight loss of 400,000 since then to warrant not mentioning it?

@ Doctor_Tom: I'm tired of people calling them non-Christians. I have a lot of Mormon friends, and they believe in Christ. Shouldn't that be the one and only definition of a "Christian?"

@ doctor_Tom While Mormonism may not be close to the base Christian faith, it's still considered a derivative. They're referencing the roots here, not the similarity in practice. At the end i just kept typing in dumb... I wasn't baptized a happy catholic ;)

@Sporcleadmin: Assuming all the options listed for the 75 million answer are acceptable, then they should all appear when any of them is entered. It would be a pity if someone entered a different option then spent the next 5 minutes trying to spell Presbyterian. Similarly, the examples cited against the top 1.5 million answer should all appear when any option is entered.

@shel99-- Unitarians & or Universalists are not considered to be Christian by some because they don't believe in the Trinity (Father, Son & Holy Spirit). My favorite explanation is from the old Eric Idle movie "Nuns on the Run," where Idle, a criminal disguised as a nun, tried to explain the Trinity to a class of high school girls. After a few comments like "It's never easy to bethe son of a successful father," he gives up & tries his Irish Catholic partners version of "God is like shamrock" adding "He's little, green, and split three ways."

@shel99: Unitarianism is a Christian religion. I'm guessing they didn't make this list because it isn't one of the "major" denominations. I tried to find out how many members there are, but was unsuccessful. If anyone knows the answer, feel free to share. Thanks!

@ JohnJF: The UCOC should not be lumped in with ARM (American Restoration Movement) churches, erroneously identified as Stone-Campbell here. The UCOC traces its roots to the Congegationalist churches in the colonial era.

I'll admit that Mormonism has its roots in Christianity but it is not Christian. Believing that Jesus existed is not the only criteria for being christian. The Mormons don't believe in many of the crucial doctrines of the Bible such as the justification by faith alone, the belief that there is one true God, the nature of God, and the nature of Jesus just to name a few.

MovieDynamic, most non-Catholic branches of Christianity are Protestant. Everyone was Catholic back in the day, until Martin Luther went and nailed a piece of paper to a door, causing a massive split, and hence, 500 years later, this quiz.
