Awesome quiz idea! Top two were gimmes. But I thought number 5 was number three. It was essentially just run through what your family members have died of. Murder or suicides should be bonuses as they're interesting stats.

I think 'dementia' should be accepted for Alzheimer's; I typed that assuming that and other forms of dementia would be grouped together. And possibly 'infection' for septicemia, but that's me being picky. Can't believe I didn't guess accidents! Great quiz.

@jzev: Word. I think pretty much all but cancer and alzheimer's. Don't know what sepsis is. Just remembered that from grey's anatomy.

Hopefully with improvements in medical science, some of these will strat to fade from the list, but I guess accidents will always be there.

I agree with Joe_Ball -- dementia should be accepted for Alzheimer's, which is a subtype of dementia.

the quiz shouldnt take "renal disease" and display the "essential hypertension, etc" like it does. "Renal disease" and "kidney disease" are the exact same thing

I was surprised that almost 10,000 more people die each year from suicide than from homicide.

Yes, if only we can eliminate all these preventable diseases, almost no one will ever die.

@ Joe_Ball: I think you have a point with Alzheimer/dimentia, but don't think infection should be accepted for septicemia. Septicemia specifically refers to the condition of having bacteria in the blood. Infection, if it were accepted as an answer, would cover not only septicemia but 'influenza and pneumonia' (number 8) as well.

Dementia is a syndrome. Alzheimer's is a cause of dementia much like HIV is a cause of AIDS.

Interesting quiz, though these types of quizzes can be rather frustrating since the answers are somewhat vague.

@philoKGB- HIV is a viral infection that progresses to AIDS when the person becomes severely immunodeficient. But you are correct that dementia is a syndrome. Alzheimer's is just the most common type of dementia. There are multiple causes of dementia, but only one cause of AIDS.

Zazu's comment led me to think up something that would be interesting to see: least common causes of death. I'd imagine things like shark attack, snakebite, spontaneous human combustion...

@JAJDH - AIDS is probably a factor in a lot of the influenza type deaths; people with lower t cell count are more susceptible to cold/flu, and that is what tends to actually kill people, not AIDS.

It's the bonuses that shocked me. I knew the murder rate in the United States was through the roof but when you actually see the number of people it really does take your breath away. The murder rate in the US is almost double that of the worst European Country (Switzerland) which, unsurprisingly, is the only European country where guns are legal and widespread. It is a staggering 7x higher than the lowest rate in the continent (Norway). Murder Rates Per 100,000 people: United States 5.6 Canada 1.85 France 1.59 England & Wales 1.38 Germany 0.9 Japan 0.64 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_murder_rate Unbelievable.

I separated that last comment into different paragraphs and into a mini table so it was easy to read but the site has jumbled it into a horrible mess for some reason. Anyway, the suicide rates by country also makes quite interesting reading too. I'm amazed at how high the suicide rate is amongst men and how low it is in the UK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate
