"Nowhere man" is a better description of my attempt at this quiz. ;-)
Feb 18th, 2009 at 17:54 GMT
I got the first 3 and thats about as much of that song as I remember. Then I just start humming along.
Feb 18th, 2009 at 18:00 GMT
I love this song and thought I'd ace it but I only got about a third. Are there anymore bonus answers along with winnemucca?
Feb 18th, 2009 at 18:01 GMT
I think I am getting all of those stupid ads mixed up. No New York, Tuscaloosa, etc. I'm pretty pissed off Hackensack actually is here.

Great quiz...tried a version trying to remember and didn't get far, and then tried listening along and got a lot more (though not as many as I should have got!). Best version of this song is the great Hank Snow's, in my opinion...

Some how I think he hasn't been to all these places
Feb 18th, 2009 at 19:11 GMT
Great quiz...but would be better in a map format.
Feb 18th, 2009 at 19:28 GMT
darn. he's even been to the city I live in now, but I didn't know. I've heard the song a few times but don't know it well. So I just kept writing in state names and big cities. somehow I ended up with 21

Awesome quiz. How does it only have an average rating of 3 out of 5?

didn't like it
Feb 18th, 2009 at 19:56 GMT
82/91 XD I memorized the song at one point. spellings got me, plus I forgot the four before chasta nebraska alaska completely.
Feb 18th, 2009 at 21:46 GMT
I got 24. Not bad for somebody whos really never listened to it before.
Feb 18th, 2009 at 21:58 GMT
63/91 while listening to the song (i know, cheating; i got about 15 without that). I know there's a city in florida called "Opa Locka", is that what he said, not "Opalacka" ?

Johnny Cash rocks, and had a very busy schedule apparently.

Personally I totally sucked at this one but I love the game -- great idea!! Sporcle and the Man in Black rock, as always. :-)

how about a quiz for all of petey pablo's girls in "freek a leek"?
Feb 19th, 2009 at 03:10 GMT
All I knew was the version in the Hertz rental car ad - and I guess I didn't even know that all that well. Great idea for a quiz!
Feb 19th, 2009 at 04:08 GMT
I can't believe how few I got! Three of the places were in Arkansas, for Pete's sake! I'm from Arkansas!...So, is Johnny Cash, though, so I guess that explains that (...no...). *sigh* good quiz
Feb 19th, 2009 at 06:47 GMT
@joe: The one just before Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska... is Chatanika, a little wide spot in the road about 40 miles north of my hometown, Fairbanks Alaska. Good to see Alaska mentioned twice, though I've lived here 50 years and never saw Johnny Cash once.
Feb 19th, 2009 at 09:06 GMT
@fsmra7: Well, it is kind of a big place. You probably just missed each other. *wink*

What's also cool about this quiz is that having never heard the song, you can make a couple guesses and start noticing patterns. Doesn't get you far, but I did get 20 by picking up on a couple of those patterns (-ville, cities ending with a long O, etc...)

78/91 I had the song memorized at one point but spelling got me. Also, I thought it was Eldersburg. Not Ellensburg.
Apr 15th, 2009 at 00:36 GMT
4/91. Pretty good for someone who hasn't listened to this song in years... I need to get it on my iPod, it's catchy.
May 31st, 2009 at 19:56 GMT
23/91 while typing and listening through, harder than u might think
Jan 17th, 2010 at 04:07 GMT
I think it would be cool if "Everywhere" were a bonus answer at least
Jan 27th, 2010 at 14:05 GMT
Why hasn't anyone told Johnny Cash that there's actually more to the world than the USA? ;)
Mar 30th, 2010 at 06:49 GMT
@America It's definitely Ellensburg, I'm sitting there right now! :D We're only about 15,000 people, but he performed at our rodeo once.
May 29th, 2010 at 03:13 GMT
If Everywhere were a bonus answer, then Pete's Sake should be to. I once heard that the original version of the song, before Johnny Cash made it a hit, had a bunch of Australian places that few Americans had ever heard of.
Jul 13th, 2010 at 04:56 GMT
finally! useless song lyric knowledge finally paid off - i memorized this song years ago and even though i had to sing it to myself like 5 times i managed to get them all right
Aug 9th, 2010 at 14:01 GMT
i missed 3 because i always thought they were admore, ellisburg and faraday instead :(
Apr 11th, 2011 at 19:24 GMT
Was hoping to find this quiz - if I didn't find it, I was going to do it myself! Would have got more if I could spell properly! Great Quiz.
Nov 4th, 2011 at 14:12 GMT
Opalacka = Opelika...small town on eastern border of Alabama And I always thought Jellico was Tellico until I listened again. Great quiz!
Dec 19th, 2011 at 11:52 GMT
AMAZING! but yet again, my spellings let me down! only managed 68 :(. Cash is a legend!
Mar 11th, 2012 at 02:37 GMT
It was orginally full of Australian towns, not American ones
Aug 22nd, 2012 at 17:51 GMT
Sing_It_Out96 is correct. The original version was an Australian one. It was later adapted to this North American version by Canadian Hank Snow. I have to say, looking at the Australian version, it sure would be a lot of fun. Tullamore, Seymour, Lismore, Mooloolaba, Nambour, Maroochydore, Kilmore, Murwillumbah, Birdsville, Emmaville, Wallaville, Cunnamulla, Condamine, Strathpine, Proserpine, Ulladulla, Darwin, Gin Gin, Deniliquin, Muckadilla, Wallumbilla, Boggabilla, Kumbarilla...

is it Tocapillo or Tocopillo? Per Wikipedia (yeah I know) it's Tocopillo
