Yeah I got Shelley (Frankenstein) Doyle (The Hound of the Baskervilles) and Dickens (A Tale of Two Cities). Anyone who doesn't get Dickens is living under a rock.

I didn't get Dickens, but you're the one who didn't get Jane Austen and George Orwell.

I got 17, but only because my son reminded me how to spell Woolf

I knew most of them. The only ones I didn't get were the ones I had never read before. But I couldn't remember Emily Bronte even though. I think the last name confused me.

Technically, there isn't actually a book called Alice in Wonderland - it's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

I'd've put Rushdie up there.

It confused me that "Bronte" didn't work although last names alone worked for all the other authors. It seems common on sporcle for a common last name to trigger all the matching answers.

@Stewart as there is more than one Bronte, you needed the first name.

Thanks, good quiz. I agree re the Brontes - it's too easy in their case to accept the surname.

i'm having a problem with alice in wonderland, as it had been pointed out that the book is alice's adventure in wonderland.

I got half of it and George Eliot by accident, because I had T.S. Eliot in mind without looking at any clues. :p And yes, I missed Dickens. I just don't know and the most famous have a habit of not coming to mind when the clock is ticking...but I gave up early, I should use the time to be more efficient. Hehe.

Interesting to see what counts as a classic in Britain.

Interesting... no Conrad, Trolloppe, Collins, Fielding or Richardson, yet HG Wells and Huxley make the quiz!! Pretty sure Shakespeare was British too... :) Only one poet and no dramatists...

Because "Bronte" wasn't accepted, I assumed I was remembering the authors wrong. Be consistent. Make us put the whole name for everyone, or accept the last name alone for everyone. This was lame.

I don't think anyone could argue that all of the works have merit and could be described as "classics". I agree that there are a lot of other great authors and poets that merit inclusion. TS Eliot was an American (albeit UK naturalised). Took 8 attempts before spelling Thackeray correctly.

I am much better at American literature. I recognized the authors' names after they showed up on this quiz, but I never heard of three of these books. Perhaps I should do what someone did on the American Lit quiz and pronounce everything I don't know as garbage to hide my own ignorance! (Just kidding, I promise to check out "To the Lighthouse" the next time I hit the library.)

I lost points. Some through forgetfulness, others through sheer inability to spell the names.

Again, an interesting collection, and, again, too much time for a recall exercise. Still, my compliments for putting up a literary quiz that makes us Sporclers think again about books we've been meaning to read or reread.

@kaulbach: What a silly comment - obviously not every single classic British author is going to be in the quiz, otherwise the list would go on forever! And personally, I think Wells and Huxley are better choices than the ones you've suggested.

have read all but two of these and I still only got 14. It was the best of quizzes. It was the worst of results.

I typed Bronte and Charlotte came up. Surely if you have to type both names, this shouldn't have happened.

I could've sworn that Wuthering Hights was Bronte, but typing "bronte" only gave me Charlotte for Jane Eyre

I missed five... maybe not too bad, but still pretty embarrassing for an English student (in both senses of the word - a Brit who studies English).
